From mint.ca: On April 10, 2012, the Royal Canadian Mint unveiled a new generation of one-dollar and two-dollar circulation coins. By combining several leading-edge security features along with its patented Multi-Ply Plated Steel technology, the Mint is producing more resistant, long-lasting coins as well as increased cost-efficiencies for the Government of Canada. As these coins find their way into your change, we're pleased to share interactive views, close-up photos and detailed insight on how the Mint leads the evolution of circulation coins in Canada and around the world. http://www.mint.ca/store/mint/learn...nd-2-6800002

does anyone have 2012 loonie and toonie yet? I'm wondering if RCM will make any old style(for circulation) ones this year

Both Colonial Acres and Gatewest have rolls of 2012 loonie and toonie for sale. So I assume they are business strike. There must be some that have gone into circulation, but I haven't seen any yet.

The 2012 ones I have I believe were pulled from rolls so there will be some "old style" circulation loonies and toonies in 2012.

Do you know how much it costs to mint those? Micro-engraving costs a lot. Maybe that's why they stopped (deceided to stop) minting pennies -- for more money on loonies and toonies!

Looks like the dates for both of these coins will likely be on the obverse.

They look nice, but I think it was a bit of overkill. There are better things for taxpayers dollars to go to right now other than pocket change security features.

I don't know. The British Pound coin is being counterfeited like crazy. Something has to be done.

I am surprised it took them this long to do it... considering that the two-dollar counterfeiting rings operated as early as 2006, in Montreal (the famous 2004 and 2005 dated "Montreal Mint" twoonies).
