I was thinking of buying one, but never have owned one in my life, any insights of what the best Metal Detector is for the money? (I would like one that's not expensive but works real good)

I think most will tell you that Garrett makes a few pretty good affordable models. A very good friend of mine is one of the top Garrett dealers in the country. He'll be straight up with you if you want to shoot him an email and tell him bobby131313 sent you. "sales at biggfredd dot com" is his address.

Five 4 fighting Garretts can be a good starter detector. I frequent alot of metal detecting forums and the Garrett Ace 150 and 250 have gotten good reviews. Tesoro also makes some good machines but they may be a bit higher priced. Whites also makes some good starter detectors. Garrett, Whites and Tesoro all have good websites. One plus on Tesoro is the lifetime warranty. No other detector companies offer that last I checked. I use a Whites MXT for my main detector. I also have a Tesoro Deleon for a spare detector. The MXT is a little challenging to use for a beginner. I would also suggest if there is a detector dealer within an hour or two drive. Go there and see the detectors in person. I hope I have helped, BenVA

I use a Whites DFX machine. I find it good on the farmland & grassed parks around here plus it also makes for a pretty good beach detector too. I can be a bit technical at first but practice makes perfect. It's an good machine but goes for about $1600 in the UK.

I was just about to ask the same question. What's a decent affordable detector. But if we're now up in the $1600 range for one, what is everyone considering affordable? I know you weren't talking about affordable when you mentioned $1600, but are there detectos for the 1-200 range that are decent?

I guess I will have to do some browsing online.

I just bought an ace 150 for $150. That seamed to be the lowest price for one that had the minimum features I wanted. I wanted one that you could turn on and off the all metal mode. I live on a farm and am always tring to find bolts nuts small tools that fall into the long grass.

Try looking in magazines dedicated to metal detecting & you may well find second hand models in very good conditions for a more 'reasonable' price. The model I quoted above can be bought for half that price ( & less ) if you buy second hand. I can also recommend CSCOPE detectors ( found my first silver hammered ) which are half the price of a DFX brand new. I guess it all depends on what your budget is & how much you are gonna use your detector...& where you are gonna use it. The DFX is great on land & on the beach, many are good on one but not the other. I had a friend who paid around $90 for a machine & it couldn't detect a Roman coin that I held in my hand & placed under it...yet it was great for modern coins & scrap.
Shop around, plenty of bargains to be had.

The Ace 150 and 250 can be had new for their names in dollars......
See bobby's friend.
I have an ACE250 and it will detect pretty much all metals, will even find Gum wrappers....
I am very happy with it. I used to own a Fisher back in the early 80's in the UK. It was a pain to set up. The Ace series are switch on and go.
I have don't intend to upgrade until I have found enough change to do so. With my current rate of finds my wife will be inheriting my 250 in about two years...

Can someone tell me the difference between ACE 150 and ACE 250, and is the 250 worth the extra $60?

The 250 has a better discriminator and a few more preset modes.

The Garret 250 has been mentioned a lot here. The White's Prizm I or II would be in the affordable range for those of you that don't want to spend too much on your first machine. Good Luck.
