A question regarding the 1954 Royal Visit Commemorative. I have one in my collection. Looks to be in ok condition, but in the context of the earlier part of this thread I wonder if it has been "buffed up" ?. I am not very good at determining this yet. I have attached a picture. Thanks for your help Squire

... I got it a long time ago. Don't remember the details. But I have recently seen 1954 Florins in similar condition in one of the coin shops in the Melbourne CBD. Do you think it is "buffed up" trout1105 ?.

Hard to tell from the pic's Squire. If they are real shiny and have no lustre then there is a real chance they have been buffed or dipped. If the mint lustre is still there then you have nothing to worry about

Squire wilson if you want to find out if your coin has been cleaned or dipped tilt the coin under good lighting and you should get a "cartwheel" effect although if you do not get this cartwheel effect it means that it has been cleaned or dipped. Otherwise you can look at the fields of the coin if you see a series of scratches all going in the same direction it almost always means that it has been cleaned. Also you can have a look at the high points of the coin and the most intricate parts of the design and if they look rounded or lack some detail although this may be a result of wear or a weak strike. Nice coin tho

Hard to tell from lighting but it looks like it may be dipped to me. It's still got nice detal and if its been in your collection a while and youre happy with it then theres no harm unless you massively overpaid or something. Try oh my florins method and let us know.

Thanks all for the useful feedback. I particularly like "oh my florins method" because it is so easy to apply. And because my coin does "cartwheel" when I tilt it under strong light !!. I shall check out the coin shop in the Melbourne CBD next time I am down that way. Will try the test on those coins. Will let you know what they are selling for, if anybody is interested. Squire

I'd say your florin may have been dipped, only way to really tell (as is hard to tell from a photo) is to hold the coin in the air and move it from side to side, see if the brightness follows a pattern, if it moves with the light it is most likely mint/cartwheel lustre if not it has most likely been dipped. Having said that I'm hardly I'm an expert when it comes to later date florins.
