I wonder if that shortage is related to that truck full of loonies and toonies who fell last spring in Ontario.

I work cash at a store and I haven't found any old style loonies or toonies yet either. They seem to be really rare in circulation.

mintages will be released next year in the mint report.

mintage isn't as important as circulation numbers. if they minted 5,000,000 but only released 5% and then "recovered" then rest then we're talking :)

Thank you for the numbers! However, how many were destroyed or damaged in the accident on HWY 11 in Ontario? (likely no one has the answer except maybe the mint)

This accident occured March 28, 2012 and spilled nearly $3 million in loonies and toonies. I've tried looking at the pictures and to me it looks the old style toonies, but I cannot say for sure. Have a look for yourself and let me know what you see?

Mintage figure is not as important as the actual number of old designs loonie and toonies distributed, this number the RCM doesn't want to release. A friend who works at Winnipeg has told me very few of these loonies and toonies were released for western Canada for only a couple weeks and Ontario shipment ended on the side of the TransCanada, then they announced the security design and not allowed to ship the old designs coins. If someone with big pull can get the RCM to answer the distribution number? You can always get the two coins in sets like O Canada, etc.

my eye says those in the crash were old style. as long as the photo + my monitor show the proper coloring, the new ones look bright gold as opposed to the old brass looking ones.

I had inquired this through the access for information. I was told that the loonies and toonies involved in the accident were old style and that they were all used in the ARP. However the numbers could not be disclosed and guess the reason:

Because it would tell someone how many coins are typically transported in a truck and that would be a security concern.

I was thinking of someone doing a heist of a truck full of $5 million coins. Go figure

What is really important number is the distributed figure take the 2012 loonie 21400000 produced, but if only lets say 100000 were distributed and 60,000 units in coin sets then we know there was only 160000 old design loonies available to the public if this example is accurate. When I enquire about this question the RCM would not answer, maybe you will have better luck with another freedom of information request.

I'm surprised they actually made any of them in the old design. Why not just wait a month and begin coining with the plated steel slugs for 2012. They will always have a premium to them I expect. I bought 2 of the 2012 old loonies for $10 here in the States.
