The true value of the mint's numbers are that they show how scarce the old-style loonies and toonies would have been even if there hadn't been the accident. Given the time and location of the accident I think it is safe to assume this constituted much of the old-style loonie/toonie coins destined for eastern Canada, which were consequently never distributed at all. That makes these old-style coins even more rare as they were only distributed in western Canada.

As for DoubleEagle20's question, why make them at all? The bureaucratic mind at work. They were scheduled to be made, so they would be made no matter what. It's the same kind of thinking that gets city crews out watering the grass in parks during a summer rain.

Wow, now I feel very lucky for snagging one of these in Edmonton. As the details come out, this will surely become another fascinating story of Canadian numismatics...

I think the impact would have been greater if they did not start the ARP. the ARP is going to make every year of loonie and twoonie a bit more harder to come by long term, especially in lower grades.

Any ideas as to which is scarcer of the two. In my experience, I've found 3 of the old style toonies, but none of the old loonies. It would seem based on my (VERY) limited sample that the old loonie is tougher to come by. Does this hold up for the rest of you, or is it simply a product of the small sample size?

The old style loonies and toonies after accounting for those lost in accident will probably be not as many but they are still enough around. Just the number of sets - Specimen (75,000), and there were at least 8 gift sets with similar mintages so that in itself is about 500,000+.

IMHO there is a lot of hype and people have been artifically jacking up prices for these coins as if there were only a 1000 of them around.

But then many dealers had discounted the gift sets over the holidays below their list prices.

Surely there are not as many as the 1996 toonies but I think there are enough for the number of collectors that are out there. Of course from a long term perspective they will have more value than other mintages but it is not going to be out of reach. Those who have bought rolls perhaps will be able to sell it for 4x to 5x but beyond that IMHO it would be a loss leader.

No old-style toonies yet, one old-style loonie in the first loonie roll I ever broke open to look through. However, I haven't done too much toonie hunting because it is expensive!

The most important answer if someone can get the RCM to answer is how many of these loonie and toonies were distributed, with that our question will be answered. As asked on this forum how many of us have found a 2012 in change?

I work in a variety store and I've found at least a dozen old style toonies in the last year but not one loonie.

The loonies are completely absent in my area. Were up to 10 old style toonies. I purchased the two loonies we have not including the ones in the sets. These 2 $ coins just started showing up in the last month so perhaps you might still find some.

I heard that the loonies were only distributed in Western Canada. Are most of you unlucky guys east of Manitoba?
