Hi everyone,

I'm very new here! I've been lurking and reading everyone's posts and really enjoying all the great things I'm learning. I've been a collector since childhood but only in my late 30's did I start to get more serious. I mostly collect from circulation, but I buy a few things from RCM too if I like how they look (e.g. the Map of Toronto coin from last year).

I was going through some pocket change and discovered this five cent piece 2007:

2007-5-Cent-With-Blobs...-Error-Or-Post-Mint?

2007-5-Cent-With-Blobs...-Error-Or-Post-Mint?

(PS. Photo taken with my iPad - I apologize if the quality isn't good enough. I took two photos with different lighting to try to highlight the "blobs".)

Anyway, this is my first time looking through change when I even knew that it would be interesting to look for error coins. Any feedback on this would appreciated: what is it, have others seen similar things, is it an error or is it something post-mint?

Thanks!

Looks like a nose wart. I would say Plating (PLANCHET)
defect.

Lol! Nose wart indeed! I actually wasn't even looking at the small discolored spots....

So, again, forgive me for my newbie-ness; do you mean that the spots are the plating defects, or the much bigger blobs to the right of the portrait inside and through the D G Regina text?
Rest in Peace

First of all...
Are those bumps as high as the rim itself...Looks like it to me when I run it through my program...?

Thanks for the welcome!

The bumps are not as high as the edge. In fact, I just did a little test with a very fine tip probe and discovered that the bumps are like bubbles: they can be depressed. Weird! It seems like the plating has come off of the underlying metal.

So is that a common problem? Is it something that originates with the mint or is it something that develops after a coin starts to circulate?
