My 90 year old dad gave me this coin that he said he found when he was a little kid living in Newport, RI. can anyone tell me anything about it? I realize the numbers 1340 might mean some other date in arabic, but not sure. What is the coin made of? What is the meaning of the two different shaped stars on each side? What approximate value? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
It's the catalog number of this type in the Standard Catalog of World Coins issued by Krause Publications. Most world coin collectors use it for identification purposes. The difference between 29.1 and 29.2 is the privy marks which you can see on the bottom of your first picture. They indicate that your coin was minted in Paris.
