Anyways.... so I just got into this obsession hobby and decided to visit the local flea market where there are several dealers. Armed with the little knowledge I've acquired over the past month or so and my iPhone loaded with the RedBook, and Cherry Pickers Guide, went "hunting" for bargains and found these bad boys!

You be the judge (as I'm still a noob) - I'm 90% sure the business strike is a small, but only 50% on the proof.

if these (or at least one) are in fact small dates, what do you think of a possible grade/ value?

The proof is a large date, but the business strike appears to be a small date.

I'm not sure about the value, since it looks pretty scratched up.

Nice finds! Flea markets can yield some treasures if you look carefully. Anyway, I think the Proof is a Large Date. BUT...the Mint coin is almost definitely a Small Date! Most 70s Small Date cents were found in mint sets, and obviously yours came from that source, based on the cellophane the coin is in. Congratulations!

I also purchased a 1979 unc LMC and another 1970s (lr date) and even paid 5 cents more $0.35 for each and some coin tubes from him... I think $0.30 is a purdy good deal for a SML Date - checking on ebay seems they range from $30 - $85

Best part is I bought it all with 2 1968 Kennedy halves I found while roll hunting!

Do you folks have any helpful tips on what to look for in pick bins? Stuff thats easily overlooked - similar to this type of situation?

CPG and RedBook is available on iBooks cool thing about the CPG is that its in a different form than traditional iBooks (maybe pdf?) but you can "zoom in" on the different pages which works great considering the topic. There's also a couple apps I use to quickly determine varieties, but they aren't at all a "complete" resource. Pocket prospector, iCoins, and coinbook pro. All have a little something to offer.... I wish CopperCoins.com would make an app.

I find the Mint and Proof set guide in the RedBook to be quite handy when CherryPicking the different sets on what to look for. Also the ebay app to see what people are paying for what. Not that I want to sell anything off (other than to upgrade my collection), but it helps to know real world value in case I desperately need the cash.

Almost forgot "A Guide Book of Lincoln Cents" by Q. David Bowers - the best read for cherrypicking everything and anything Lincoln Cent series - even has what to look out for from year to year and how to spot dipped coins and perfect strikes per year.
