I think you're right, but I don't see a single culture as necessary or even desirable. The biggest obstacle to your vision is probably religion.

Probably not in every possible way but in some ways, yes, it is necessary. Consider that a culture that values truth, honor, and integrity cannot treat successfully with another one that does not. In some cultures, it is perfectly acceptable to kill those with whom they disagree about religion. In others, it is not. Such differences are next to impossible to reconcile and reconciliation of such things is absolutely necessary. Besides... all human cultures change and adapt over time and there is nothing sacred about its level of development at any given time. All I am saying is that there has not been sufficient time to allow this to happen to the extent that is necessary for a truly united humanity. But, who knows? Maybe some Independence Day style aliens will show up, get all rowdy, and force us to truly unite in spite of ourselves.

I would agree that religion is a major obstacle to such a union but instead of killing each other over this all that need happen is that people learn to accept that there is more than one good path to progress in spiritual development.

Well said Ed, couldn't agree more; certainly won't happen in my lifetime, but almost has to occur sometime on this crowded planet. I hope we don't see Independence Day aliens, but possibly some common disaster will pull us together. Maybe a ELEE (sp?), again hopefully not in my lifetime!

Ed, perhaps I am using a narrower definition of culture than your are. Your original quote was:

Quote:
We would need a single culture with similar ideas about language, education, economics, justice, law, behavior, and perhaps other things

We would definitely need similar ideas about education, economics, justice, law and behavior. I just think there could be some room for different languages, cultures, and mores, as long as they didn't conflict with the overriding principles you outlined.

silvercoinrn - there is no shortage of water, just a shortage of technology to easily desalinate sea water in an economical way.

Hopefully by 2020 all races will understand and respect one and other, and we would travel in warp speed.

I noticed a few days ago on kitco that they were saying that if the 26.25 level was breached and closed at or under that level that major technical damage could signal a major downswing. Anyone else read that? I can't find it anymore on Kitco.
