Thanks for the input everyone. Decided against cleaning it for now. I don't plan on selling this one because it's the first Peace dollar I ever held in my hands, and my father gave it to me so it has sentimental value.

I would like one in better condition to go along with it though :)
Rest in Peace

One of the guys I work with is a professional jeweler when he's in work and not in a recession, and his suggestion for my coins (silver and copper both) was . . . .
. . . . Heinz ketchup.

At least we know why he never advanced beyond jewelry.

Aside from not wanting to put money in John Kerry's pocket, coins ain't hamburgers. Read the ingredients: vinegar (like you bring out the dates of Buffalos with) and acid from the maters. He'd prolly tell you that toothpaste will shine up your rings.

I guess you could always buy a scrapper, and not spend much money.

Hey, I grew up a couple of hours from the Heinz factory. It's a demigod in my homestate.

That aside, like I said, I think it's probably one of those party-trick things you can share (the same way I can tell you how to mimic a gunshot because I worked in sound effects for a student theatre--doesn't mean I'd advise you to go around doing it). That aside, it's really hard to make some people understand that there are certain ways to treat coins. I handed my mother a Morgan and told her to handle it by the edges and she gave me this withering look and tipped it over into her hand.

It's a super common coin that you can replace very easily. If you have no desire to sell it, I think it could benefit from a proper dip in EZest. Dilute it to at least 50% or less and rinse in a base solution (such as a solution of baking soda), then rinse in distilled water.

Usually, the advice to not clean is correct. In some cases, if properly done, it can be used to conserve a coin that otherwise looks pretty poor and/or hopeless.

What I think you should FIRST ask yourself is exactly how much sentimental value does it have, and would cleaning it ruin that for you. Since you sound like you are not going to sell this coin, all that matters is how you personally feel about cleaning it. Does this "destroy" it in your mind, ruining the memory of your father? Or is it merely taking care of a gift he gave you?

If you don't think cleaning it ruins the sentimental value (and you arent going to sell it), then clean it if the end result looks better to you. Still your decision.

Since you posted this thread asking for our input it seems that you are not sure how you feel about all off this, maybe "on the fence" about it..... I would suggest just setting it aside for awhile until you're sure how you feel about it. You cannot undo cleaning it, but you can always clean it later. Don't rush and ruin something that you later realize means a lot to you. A lot of the time we dont realize how much something means to us until its gone..... yeah I know that sounds pretty cheesy but its been true in my experience.

I agree with just carl. It is your coin, do with it what you want. It does look very unattractive in its current condition.

OneBowl, I am glad to entertain, more distressed because I also scare [D:]

I think the "sit on it, wait until you are ready to decide" is good advice, though.
