Personally I really enjoy the appearance of the 1843 and the detail that is shown. The hairlines on the back are kinda distracting but I think the positives far outweigh the negatives on this coin. On the 1841 the toning does not do much for me.

I think they are both nice but I agree with Namachieli as far as matching the other coins on the page in looks / toning.

I prefer the 1841 reverse and the 1843 obverse. Since the hairlines bother me more than the toning I'd go for the 1841.
Gradewise the 1841 looks AU-50 and the 1843 is a notch higher, AU-53 or AU-55. Both are pretty sweet examples and I'd be happy with either one.

I think the 1843 would look better in the album. IMO. But both of these coins are VERY nice!!

I'll take the toning on the '41 over the hairlines on the '43.

I like both and all else being equal the hairlines on the reverse of the 1843 would cause me to put the 1841 in the album. As far as having a matched page in regards to toning that all depends on the series' on that particular page. Next to the Seated dollars you could have blast white Morgan and Peace dollars without any problem as that is how most of those dollars come and it would be easier than to try to find toned coins to match the earlier dollars. Put me with not liking the hairlines on the 43. I would say wipe marks. The 41 is a nice coin with a touch more wear, but overall better eye appeal for the lack of significant marks. Having said that, I would cwertainly welcome both into my collection.

Wow, I love these coins. Sexy. I like them both, but they are both cleaned.
If I had to choose I would grab the 1841 just due to the rainbow luster.
May the forces be with you!

Thanks for all of the great comments. I ended up going with the 1841 -- I like the toning better (again, the pics didnt fairly represent it), and it didn't have the distracting wipe marks that the 1843 had. I do wish it had the strike of the 1843, but it's so tough to find a nice Seated dollar, that I cant complain too much :) The 1841 is also coming from a friends collection - and I have it in hand. He says it is an ex ANACS AU55 coin. The 1843 was from a dealer that I was considering buying from - the dealer listed it as AU/BU. Thanks again! I'll probably do this again in the future as I thought it was fun and helps teach me how the masses see coins.

I like the 1843 better too. Much nicer in color. Closer to the original color. It looks like it is a pretty high grade too, like AU+.

Good choice, really like the toning for the '41. I'd also go with AU-50 for the '41. Great coins!
