Hello everybody! I'm wondering about authenticity of this coin... Well, what I can tell is that all pre-1866 Seated dollars didn't have a motto or the scroll on the reverse. So, it passes this fact. ) I know about the poor quality of pictures... but this is what I have... What do you think about it? Thank you beforehand for your opinions!

My impression is not genuine. The details look weak and some of the denticles on the left side of the reverse appear to be separated from the rim.

For BIN at $275, a no return policy and unlikely to be authentic, I'd pass. For comparison, here's a completed listing, more pleasing to me personally and one where I don't immediately question it's authenticity, all for around the starting bid on the one you show. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...p=true&rt=ncThat other one should be reported if members here are certain it's counterfeit.

Where did you get the coin? Did the seller state that it is a genuine coin? Off hand just from the pictures I would say it's not. Have you tried putting a magnet to it to see if it sticks, though not all of the fakes are magnetic most are. What is the weight of the coin, it's supposed to be 26.73 grams uncirculated so your coin should be very, very close to that since it doesn't appear to have much wear. Take a known good Morgan or Peace dollar if you have one and compare the ring of it to the ring of this dollar when dropped on a table top, they should sound the same. If it doesn't pass these checks and the seller stated it was genuine take it back to him/her and get your money back. Ed ANA LM-3175

Definitely counterfeit. Edges banged up to make it look like it circulated. Out of focus photos to try to cover up bad points. This one should be reported.

Ah, that explains it. Defer to the other experts here and run, Forest, run! Don't be surprised if the listing is pulled soon. Seated Liberty dollars are really nice coins, but counterfeits are out there, and it appears you found one. Be patient. If you find others that are interesting, post here again for opinions. Very, very smart move to ask the seller for more info and post here.

Thank you once again for help. With my experience now I couldn't recognize the counterfeit. Well, will keep looking then! If you have time what do you think about this Trade dollar coin? The edge at 9:30 on obverse looks strange..

I would post the Trade dollar in a separate thread as something like "Need Opinions on this Trade dollar." I'm no expert on Trade dollars, so I can't help, sorry. Expect to hear about how Trade dollars are heavily counterfeited though. You sure seem to like those types of issues. :) I'm gonna guess that 75% of the Trade dollar replies suggest getting a graded example. Good luck!

Alessan The best way to determine if it's counterfeit is to weigh and measure it. It should weigh very near 27.2 gr and have a diameter of 38.10 mm. That won't guarantee authenticity, but it will identify a forgery if it doesn't meet specs. Do a browser search "Counterfeit Trade dollar". There are many articles and discussions on what to look for. Good luck.
