I learned a lot from everyone on the Seated dime post I had - so I figured I'd throw two more coins out to see what everyone thinks. If they were priced the same (they are similar), which coin do you like better for a 7070 and why? What grade do you think you'd assign to them as well?

Coin A, 1841 Seated dollar, Rainbow iridescent toning through out (pic only shows it in some areas). Streaking on the front and back -- are they a major detractor in your eyes?

Coin B, 1843 Seated dollar, good luster and good strike. Wiped reverse? Or are those circulation marks?

Personally, I like the 1843 better. I don't like the toning on the 1841.

Not good with grading the series.

Well I would pick the one that looks best when compared to all the others on the page. You dont want a bunch of softly toned coins and then a big Dark one, with the opposite also being true.

A great typeset maintains a range of detail +/- 1 grade of average, consistent visibility, Consistent strike quality, consistent color/toning/lack of.

Though as a stand alone coin, I prefer the 1841. It's not so dark you can't easily see the details, but enough toning that you know it has been messed with much over the years.

I'd be happy with either though. :D

Can I have both?

Seriously, not a big fan of mottled toning, so I prefer the 1843.

One thing I should point out -- the toning on the 1841 appears a bit darker in the photo than reality. It certainly has original surfaces - not too light, but it's more like the top of the coin than the bottom. The toning also is visible more or less iridescent -- but it is rainbow over the whole front and back. The staining on the 1841 is also stronger in hand - and might actually be some light PMD. It was a slabbed coin at one point - so it's very minor if actual PMD.

If anyone wants the one I dont choose - i'll pass along the details on how to buy it. I have access to both right now.

1841 all the way! No doubt in my mind that is a much more beautiful coin but to each his/her own.
Rest in Peace

I like the look of the 1841 better, but the obverse detail and luster on the 1843. If forced to choose, I would go with the 1841.

If it were me I would put the 1843 in, it doesn't have the wear on the arms, breast and face as the 1841 does. If those are infact wipe marks then I change my choice.

'41 for me. I like the mottled tone and love the reverse.

1841, love the toning.

But I wouldn't turn my nose up at either one.

I like them both. The 1841 has nice toning but I think I would choose 1843 mostly because the strike and the luster. I think the Seated dollars could grade AU-50 and AU-53.

Toss-up...either one would look sweet in my 7070!

I like darker tones on a coin so I prefer the 1841. But, they're both awfully nice.

Pretty much a toss up for me with a slight lean towards the 1843.

And I must respectfully disagree with Namacheili as to what constitutes a great type set. In fact, I find the comment pretentious. My type set ranges from G-Details to Proof and I have a near black Bust Half next to a pleasing gun metal gray one. The G-Details 3 cent was from my grandfather and the Bust Half I got when I was a kid. And for the record, the set leaves "great" in the rear view mirror, despite being worth less than probably 90% of the 7070s around.
