Dear fellow coin enthusiasts, these are my thoughts on the RCM. Love it or hate it. How much money is being made or being saved by issuing commemorative circulation coins every single year? Since 1999 I can't even count how many new issues or types have come out. At least 4-12 per year is the norm now. I can't handle it! Wouldn't this country save more money by going back to the way things were - with one die for each denomination for decades on end? Most of these dies (guessing 90%) cannot even be reused after the initial release. So what's the point of making new coin designs every year? They are mass-produced and quite childish in appearance. Do I even need to mention the amount of coins that are hoarded by the masses that never get to see the light of day? Lots of people think that they'll be valuable in the future, but they are made by the billions. Not even our dimes and nickels are safe from these shenanigans and I'm quite sick of seeing new coins come out each year. Anything want to add to this notion? I know it's not a new topic but I want to reiterate my position on this with its own thread for the forum.

I only partly agree... The variety is good from my perspective because I can choose the things I really like. I don't have the "collect everything" bug. So the variety at the RCM is just fine by me.

I think it is good for the hobby! It helps start new generations of collectors! Love it or hate it, we are all guilty of grabbing the odd one and putting it away with our collections.

One or two per decade would be more than enough.

I agree that the RCM is on Overkill however it is not a bad thing for the Canadian collector.

Most mints around the world have the same policies these days. They are the result of the need for the Mint to be as profitable as possible.
I don't mind commemoratives being issued for circulation. In this case I wlll extract an example of each from circulation at face value. The Mint make a small seignorage profit out of me each time I do this.
I collect Roman coins, and the same sort of minting policies applied, but for different reasons.
The vast quantity of NCLT coinage which has a high sale price does not interest me. That is just me. Other collectors have great interest in these.

I think it's more good than bad but do find it takes a lot of time/effort to keep up. I do have the 'collect everything' bug; at least as far as the lower value coins. :-)

Is anyone else reminded of POGs when they see Canadian coinage? It's sad to see other countries looking to us and thinking that this kind of lunacy is okay.

I agree--Libertad-----It's getting increasingly difficult to keep up if one wants to have a complete collection! ---I would say maybe one significant a year would be OK but they have taken it to an extreme witch IMO takes a little away from commemorating something or event. ---One can commemorate a million things a year, a line should be drawn to make it something special. ---As far as cost, I don't see the gain verses the cost of the art work, artist copy rights, dies... and production for a one timer. ---Talking about POG's that's funny, that makes me think of NCLT, there not for me (ya ya OK for some) and I would say another topic and not here! --or maybe--! that the RCM has a master plan to make all our coinage NCLT. ---I say cut one commemorative and commemorate the penny by bringing it back instead! --- These are my thoughts!

There is a local coin shop where the owner is a little rough around the edges, if you even mention RCM products the owner will give you a 15 minute lecture. It's kind of fun to be there when someone brings it up, all the regulars head snap in that direction and we wait for the show.

I agree, the RCM puts out way too many commemorative circulation coins. Quarters are the worst. It's sad when a good ol' caribou quarter is the rarity, and the commemoratives are common. Ask yourself this: When you get a 2007-2011 quarter, is it more likely to be a caribou or a commemorative? I don't have data to back this up, but it sure seems like commemoratives are more common. Guess I should check the 2011 RCM annual report for mintages, assuming they break down 25 cent pieces by what design is on them.

I for one hope they keep doing what they're doing. I dislike the majority of offerings and don't buy them; but the choices are so varied I'm almost assured to find something I like. For the most part, RCM wouldn't be producing so many if there weren't a market. So for me, and the RCM, it's win-win.

Just so that there's no confusion, I'm not talking about stuff that the RCM sells. I mean the coins that they release into circulation each year.

Pocket 'change' - needs to 'change' once in a while. At least let's have some fun before they go completely obsolete.
Caribou, Beaver, Bluenose, yawn.
