It's some sort of scrape that happened to the die - lathe lines would be more regular.

It could have been caused by a conventional lathe. Obviously the spiral groove was on the die before the coin was struck.

I am guessing die scratches/gouges since the letters are not effected.Maybe Planchet problem?

It's definitely damage to the die, the question is the cause.

ahh NICE , the ole Flying/Shooting "D" ...

Interesting find . (reminded me of the Flying star thingy on the morgans ,just this has more behind it then them )

Looks like scratches but doesn't resemble the lathe line examples I have...as somebody already pointed out, the lathe lines are evenly spaced...and mine are spaced furthe apart.

Lathe lines would also be perfectly concentric. These are curved, but their radial point is not at the center of the coin. This is a die gouge.
