The scary thing is that every year they're getting better, but the scarier thing is that even the crap fakes STILL pass genuine more often than not. :-)
As a way to keep educated, I have actually kept in touch with Big Tree. The last time I made an order it was for a
Seated Liberty dollar, a
Trade dollar, this 1879 Morgan, and an UNC 1879 Morgan replica.
When I got the package, the UNC replica was not in it and he had substituted a different
Seated Liberty dollar. I contacted him b/c a few years ago a similar thing had happened. Back then he told me he would correct the order and just keep the ones he sent in error. This time he said he could do nothing about it and that the switch was deliberate. He said he no longer makes/has some of his coins. in 3 of the others I wanted to order he did not have.
All in all, it seems he is slowing down. I know he quit making all his Canadian line of replicas also - quite some time ago. I know when
ebay kicked him off a few years ago he lost a lot of business. I am not sure his business is doing as well as it was. He also does not update his website and never did get it completed to be working website that would take orders.
I also know he is not the one making the modern silver Maple leaf bullion copies either. I asked him for these and he said he does not have/make them.
I do not know who is still making fakes - it is obvious they are being made. Big Tree was the largest maker. It was a friend of his making the fake slabbed coins and selling them (for 200.00 each!). I do not think his productions numbers are near what they used to be
