The scary thing is that every year they're getting better, but the scarier thing is that even the crap fakes STILL pass genuine more often than not. :-)

As a way to keep educated, I have actually kept in touch with Big Tree. The last time I made an order it was for a Seated Liberty dollar, a Trade dollar, this 1879 Morgan, and an UNC 1879 Morgan replica.

When I got the package, the UNC replica was not in it and he had substituted a different Seated Liberty dollar. I contacted him b/c a few years ago a similar thing had happened. Back then he told me he would correct the order and just keep the ones he sent in error. This time he said he could do nothing about it and that the switch was deliberate. He said he no longer makes/has some of his coins. in 3 of the others I wanted to order he did not have.

All in all, it seems he is slowing down. I know he quit making all his Canadian line of replicas also - quite some time ago. I know when ebay kicked him off a few years ago he lost a lot of business. I am not sure his business is doing as well as it was. He also does not update his website and never did get it completed to be working website that would take orders.

I also know he is not the one making the modern silver Maple leaf bullion copies either. I asked him for these and he said he does not have/make them.

I do not know who is still making fakes - it is obvious they are being made. Big Tree was the largest maker. It was a friend of his making the fake slabbed coins and selling them (for 200.00 each!). I do not think his productions numbers are near what they used to be

That's a really scary fake. I buy common silver dollars all the time without much more than a glance. This goes to show I need to pay a lot closer attention.

1893 S: Right off the bat the date looks terrible.

... Comparing it to a legitimate 1879 (using Earle42's post on page 1), it looks pretty good to me. What is so obvious and terribly wrong about the date?

In fact if you look at the pic where the fake was turned green and overlaid, you will see the date is a perfect match. I think the discrepancy might be in the side by side pic where the real one has more luster and therefore the lighting affected the look of the date a little. However, there is a small "period" floating halfway up between the 8 and 7 of the fake. I admit I did not even notice this until taking the pics.

Also - I want to say an official "you are welcome" to everyone who has expressed thanks. I am very glad this info was so well received and people feel it will help in becoming more knowledgeable about the fakes.

You people in the CCF family have done a great deal for my education in the hobby and I am hoping to give back some info in any way that I can.

Hi guys, what about this coin . Found this one at one of the antique stores in Jakarta. Is it a fake? I include some pictures of the coin below. The 1st 2 pictures are the photos of the coin before I did anything with it and the pictures were taken with dslr camera. The 2nd 2 pictures taken with iphone are the coin after I dipped it in tap water for like 12 hours every day for 3 days. I was just curious whether the dirts were rust or not. The diameter is dead on ~38mm but still havent scaled it yet.
