Yes, unfortunately a Large Date. Looks like the rolling or counting machine that caused the circular impressions on the obverse also damaged a couple digits of the date, too.

I think on a small date the tops of the E and the Y in liberty will be mushy and not well defined. That helps me.

You can have this on any 1970 coin becasue of die wear. What about early die states of the 1970-S small date? They would be strong. So the weakness isn't always an indicator. What confirms a small date is the location of the 7.

These ones are so hard to determine and I think the damage from the machine roll made the 9 look like it had that hook. I was up late looking through rolls and when I came across this I had one to many and it was almost 4am lol owell

The bottom of the 7 will be in line with the 1 & 0.  Here is an example of each. Looks like a coin wrapper made this coin into a cull in a single wrapping. Happens.Edited by coop

What if the "1" and the "0" are not inline? as the illustration shows. and the tail? its below in both examples... I am confused!

The key is the "7"...Notice how it is even with the 9 and the 0 on top and bottom on the Small Date...Thats what I look for.
