Doucet Pillar of the Community United States 1315 Posts	Posted 05/20/2012 12:49 pm I recently got this coin but didn't find it in my Sear book and was wondering what you all might say about it. It is similar to the Domitian Dupondius I posted awhile back. I am wondering if it is another Dupondius and whether it is another one of the coin types that was minted in Rome for use in Syria. The seller had it described as: Syria - Seleucis and Piera - Titus - Antioch mint, 13.5g, 22mm, with no references or denomination. It's actually 25mm, 13.5g Your thoughts would be appreciated. There it is listed as.. Ref Titus AE Dupondius, RIC 761 (RIC [1962] 813a) (Vespasian) [attributed to Commagene], Cohen 326cf, BMC 891, RPC 1991 [attributed to Antioch] Titus, as Caesar, Æ Dupondius. Rome mint for Syria, 74 AD. T•CAESAR•IMP•PONT, laureate head right / TR•POT•COS III•CENSOR, winged caduceus between crossed cornuacopiae. Cohen 326corr, RPC 1991. And also Sear Roman Coins and their Values (RCV 2000 Edition) Number 2472, which my book is the 1988 Edition. This is all a bit confusing. sel_69l Bedrock of the Community Australia 21788 Posts	Posted 05/21/2012 6:58 pm I have a feeling that he lettering on this coin may have been tooled a long tome ago, perhaps in the process of being cleaned after it was dug up. Somehow, the lettering seems to lack character. I rather like this coin, anyway. Question: Does the lettering style from the various mints around the Empire vary> Report this Post to the Staff
echizento Moderator United States 23731 Posts	Posted 05/21/2012 7:12 pm There were two references for this coin that I found RIC 814, Cohen 328 and RIC 813b, Cohen 326. It's confusing because both coins are the same. You found another number RIC 761 which makes it more confusing. Report this Post to the Staff

Yours has perhaps suffered a trifle more on cleaning with a stronger attack in the spurs and serifs at the ends of each letter. A tough call for whoever is cleaning the coin up after burial.
