Does anyone have a reference for this please. I understand there's more than one variety.

I've got 2 examples, but no reference. A goog search should bring something up.
Mine have a $5 gold pattern.

The Smithsonian lists this as Scovill Mfg Co. early C20th. Thing is E Lyon died in 1858, and the address of his company then changed.
Rulau lists a number of Lyon pieces from the 1850s, which is why I hoped that there might be a Rulau for this one too, at least to help clarify the date.

The Rulau is NY511 but it does not get any more specific than 1850's.

Circulated examples of this token typically sell in the $8-$12 range. Emanuel Lyon is listed in the 1858-9 NY City directory as a seller of powders at 424 Broadway. He was apparently out of business by 1861, so this token is classified in the so-called "Merchant Era" between the Hard Times and the Civil War tokens.

alganbagerap -- Your specimen is terrific, and is one which is not seen particularly often, either

Here's a more commonly seen specimen:

Thanks, I believe that the reverse is a version of an earlier, probably larger, generic token which had an eagle on the shield and I think, a sheaf of corn to the left.

You're correct. The reverse eagle device is quite frequently seen on many pieces from that era.
