I previously asked what grading standard can be used for Spanish pillar dollars from Good to Extremely Fine, but received no response. Let me try a more plebian approach. The Krause catalog indicates that a pillar dollar in VG is worth $50, but $150 in VF. Is there any opinion as to how to differentiate between VG and VF?

I'm not an expert in the series - I don't have a dollar, only a couple of the fractional pieces - but here's my understanding.

On a VG coin, the pillars, globes and portrait will appear as nearly-featureless silhouettes.

Most of the fine detail, except on the high points, would still be visible on a VF specimen.

Sap- - Thank you. The only point of reference and comparison I can find is looking at pillar dollars sold by Daniel Sedwick, but his coins grade only VF asnd EF. Unlike the minoor denominations, I have not seen a pillar dolllar worn smooth, which I guess we can agree grades G or VG. I believbe one popint of wear is the degree to which the PLUS ULTRA is visible, but I don't know what points to look for on the obverse (shield and crownm). But thanks for your atteempt to offer some guidance.
