Hello all, I am new here and would appreciate your opinions on this coin. Hope a link is ok. Still trying to figure out how to resize. Pics were taken outdoors with a cheap Kodak.

I tried the pic optimizer but it would not load, and kept saying "Error"

The coin was given to a friend from her late father. Thanks

The good news is your coin appears to be genuine and contains almost one full troy ounce of fine gold. The bad news is it looks to have been lightly cleaned or polished and is only worth the content of the gold (which is significant in and of itself).

I basing this only on the pics provided. The coin could be a bit better than it appears.

I agree that it appears to be genuine. The coin may be cleaned or it may just be the lighting; I just can't say for sure. It may be MS but my gut feeling is that it's an AU, possibly towards the higher end.

I'm going to say not cleaned and I think I see some wear on the curls behind the ear, so maybe AU-58. It's not a key date and these have a very flat price curve from XF to about MS-61, so value would be in the $1650-$1800 range. Nice coin. I love how substantial a double eagle feels in hand.

When I received it, it had some crud around the date that I wiped off with a damp cloth, you can still see some on it, so if it has been cleaned, it was not in the recent past. Going to let a local dealer/collector look at it tomorrow. The first couple of pictures are the most accurate, too much light on th others.
Thanks for all your opinion, I like this site.

The crud was good for the coin, it adds character. Wiping it off is not good

Looking at the reverse I see four edge marks that could mean this coin was in a bezel at one time. Check the 1 o'clock, 5 o'clock, 7 o'clock and 11 o'clock positions. Can't tell for sure from the photo but it does appear to me that there were four prongs bend over the edge. If it was a jewelry piece, I double it would pull an MS grade.

Appears to be extremely light wear on high points from what I can tell. Can't be 100% certain surfaces are original.
