And BTW, since the MacroBel does not have an integrated focusing rail, you'll need a copy stand or tripod that has a decent up/down function for focusing. Keep that in mind before you buy...

As a quick aside, since I don't think it's been mentioned here yet - the bellows is used to determine magnification. You extend it further from the camera body to increase magnification, and your least mag/widest field of view is with the bellows closed.

You focus the shot by moving that entire assembly closer to or farther from the coin. So, as Ray said, you need the bellows mounted on something which can move the whole assembly up and down. Very fine adjustment is necessary, especially with increasing magnification. This is as important as the bellows itself.

I believe I would prefer a copy stand (unless you think a tripod would work better). Next question would be how tall? And any particular brand or model that you would suggest? I think I will try and talk the sell down a bit on the Spioratone bellows and lens.

I think you will need 12-15" of working distance with the 150mm lens, maybe longer for the overall GSA holder pics, plus the length of the bellows (maybe 10 inches) so you will need a copy stand that has a mounting height of perhaps 25-30". You can get away with a shorter stand if you mount the bellows using the lens standard mount rather than the camera standard. This may even result in a more rigid setup, though you would need to experiment. If you end up with a 20" or shorter copy stand, you may need to go that route.

Frankly, I'm not sure a copystand will offer fine-enough adjustment if you're using magnification. When I'm up around 3-4x, my microscope stand is difficult to focus with.

I was able to pickup the Spiratone Bellows with 150mm Macrotel lens. Got $10 off asking price of $85. Moving right along here. I reread the posts here, and also the posts on Canon 450D-Questions on Lens for Macros. Each time I read the posts, I learn something new. Throughly enjoy the reading each time also.

Agreed. For lower mags it should be OK to use a tripod. For higher mags a focusing rail may be required or a microscope stand.

I can't help with tripods. What I can say is don't spend too much on it, even one of the cheaper models should suffice based on what I've seen in many posts here.

Would this be the adapter needed to mount the Canon 450D camera to the Spiratone Bellows?

That one comes from China (I should of looked closer). I'll look for one here in the U.S.A.

Not so cheap, but they're in Illinois and you can plan on it working the first time. Tremendous customer service, to boot.

Yes, I am learning more as this thread continues.

Can I ask the best source of lighting to use with a bellows setup?

I prefer using a pair of IKEA Jansjo LEDs. They benefit from some diffusion but their gooseneck design gives them a lot of "flexibility". Plus, they're fairly cheap...Ray
