canadiancoincollector, you have a nice strike on that 1970 dollar of yours. Might it be a PL? timnic, you made the hobo? I gave up trying to hobo a nickel. I've never got a nickel dollar or half dollar from the bank here, the tellers don't want to give them out, they say whatever isn't in circulation today they have to send back to the RCM or Bank of Canada to be destroyed. But it's not like they ever said they have any in either when I asked. Looks like everyone can afford keeping their old money here. Downtown Toronto is pretty miserable for coin hunting.

SlurExe97, I'm not sure if it's PL or not, but it is very shiny and fairly reflective, as you can sort of see the reflection of my phone's camera on it.

You might have to use the "Garfield Test"... ask SlurExe97 about that one...

Hold something up on the fields, and if reflects up to several inches away you have a PL. (Or a business strike with very freshly polished dies, but I doubt it reflects as far.) I don't know how high I held Garfield up on that pic, but I just tested it again and it was pretty good up to 6.

SlurExe97, thanks for the tip, I tried it, and it reflected fairly well until around 4 inches away, is that PL?

I have a cameo business strike that reflects almost 3.5 inches, and a PL with no trace of cameo that blurs the reflection between 3.5-4, so I can't really tell. There is another method for nickel dollars but this doesn't work on the ones minted 1977 and after. The rim on PL strikes are square, and may feel a bit "sharp" if you press down on it. I had a pic of a business and a PL 1974 dollar side-by-side, but I can't find them now. Here are new pics, PL on the left, business strike on the right.

PL strikes have highly polished fields and frosted legends and details, with a square rim. Not sure if there is a standard of distance with which to measure the mirror fields, but the rim and frosted details make for an easier determination. The edge showing reeding to the corner is another diagnostic. Your dollars looked proof to me. On the example Slurex shows with the Garfield, see the square rim, the mirror finish on the field, thus the good reflection and the frosted portrait. Look at the legend for stippled finish effect of frosting and even on the beads.

I am now confused, as mine looks like the one on the right.

Some business strikes made with fresh new dies produce cameo or frosted details, with mirror finish. These are the first strikes with fresh dies. They are more valuable than PL strikes if found in MS (Mint State) conditions. Just looking at the rims of the two coins posted, not square. Less mirror finish. Could well be business strikes but nice ones. Because business strikes are sent out into circulation, less of them are in MS condition thus making MS business strikes less common or more rare.

CCC, it's possible to have a business strike that is very reflective. Both these pics are business strikes, reflection taken from 3.5 inches away. The first one reflects well up to over 6 inches, but it's too hard to catch that on camera. Sorry about the reflection on the plastic on the second one I tried to make a hobo with nothing but a cutter. Didn't work out too well.

Thanks for all the helpful information! Based off the information you guys provided, I think I can assumemine was probably a well struck business die that got circulated briefly.

Finding lots of 1999 and 2000 coins lately. Glare on this pic was kind of neat.
