You found an 1859 Cent in circulation. That is amazing.

Quote: DEVLEC, I think you meant to post that here... You are 100% correct........I read the tittle as "circulated'..and not circulation..

Found this on my last roll hunt and I need opinions as to whether this is a mint variety/error (struck through grease?) or just damage done in circulation? I don't have the experience or knowledge to determine one way or the other so the collective wisdom here will help...

PMD (Post Mint Damage) Looks like it has been scratched or gouged. And to the Forum.

Thank You for the Welcome! The damage I was wondering about is located at 7 o'clock...the "C" in Canada is missing, some beads are missing and that whole area is indented/depressed and lacks any detail like it was crushed with something (you can't really see the indented part in the picture)... Tks

There is an interesting large depressed roundish area from the "A" over to the throat and down to the rim where the beads are missing.
Could be a "strike through" of sorts..and that would explain the missing "A"..

Hi Braat, I enlarged to 400 times and can see no sign of the C. You mentioned a depressed area at about 7 o'clock, as in removed metal? The reason I mention this is at an enlarged image those scratches look like what might be slipped tooling marks. There are many ways to remove metal and many more with experienced metal craftsmen. I am by no means an expert on foreign material strike throughs so it still may be an interesting error.

priorpence - I'm understanding your response to mean... if you could see that the "C" was there then that would suggest PMD (which makes sense to me). So I looked at it again (eyeballs only) and in the right light/angle you can clearly see the "C" so unless someone convinces me otherwise I'll assume it's just another quarter :) Having said that I think I'll throw it in my "don't know what to do with it bin" and my executor can deal with it. Thanks for all the responses!

Braat, can you get a closer image (with detail) of that area? I have seen a few coins with planchet flaws, where a large area is depressed.

Are there any really large silver Canadian coins and if you buy from Canada does currency affect your cost. Our American dollar is much stronger than Canadian dollar I think by about 25%. So can you save on currency transactions?
