When collecting the sets from the 1950s, cherry pick for the nicest halves (fullest bell lines). A lot of sets in the 1950s have toning too, so keep an eye out for the really nice white coins.
And look out for the 1964 accented hair halves.

And if you want to put together your own type proof set, there are some really nice proof coins in the late 1800s.
And most proof sets aren't a good investment, especially from 1958+.
