Found this penny in the take a penny, leave a penny thing at the counter of the store. what is it? it is a little thinner than a regular penny.

I have been collecting US coins for 6 years now and still have a lot to learn and I dont think I will ever say I have learnt enough

I sort of like that edging with the little indentations. If I remember right, weren't some of the Canadian Nickels like that. If the Mint sees this, it many give them an idea for the next series.

Thing is I thought I had done my homework first before posting. I always research first before doing any such thing. Have never been a big collector but am always looking. found a wheat yesterday so worn couldnt read it.

Not sure why it is thinner, other than a minor difference in thickness for a planchet. You'd have to weight it, to see if it is within tolerance.

It is quite banged up though. Maybe that is why they left it?

Looks like it spent some time in a clothes dryer.
That is likely how it got the dents.
