It definately has the potential of being worth more with the rainbow toning. This is the first Sacagawea I have seen with a rainbow tone to it. Its a nice looking coin.

Would you think its worth getting graded? Do they grade toned coins? What would you recommend as a safe way to preserve this coin (type of holder)?

Thats a real nics Sacagawea. I would pay a premium for it based on the attractive toning. As for getting it graded, they do grade toned coins as long as they are not artificially toned. Before submiitng it I would determine what you think the grade is to gauge the coins potential value and weigh that against the TPG fee. The TPG slab will protect it thats for sure. At a minimum you may want to get a rigid plastic holder sized for Sacagawea's as the 2x2 holders do not protect the coin from future dings and nicks if it were to be dropped.

Hello doclongo, You might consider having ICG slab your Sac in their special Intercept Shield holder which supposedly protects coins from chemical changes. That might give you the best chance of maintaining the colorful tone at its current level. Other TPG holders will not necessarily protect a coin from toning. I have a BU silver eagle in a PCGS holder that was brilliant when I got it but has since developed a significant amount of brown tone. Unfortunately, it's not an improvement!

Like Spider, I've never seen a toned Sac 'til now. I think it's beautiful, and I'm now gonna look for one for my type set.

I have decided to send it to ICG to have it slabbed like you recommended. This is the first time I send a coin for grading so What do you think I should declare as its value? insure it for ? help would be greatly appreciated. THANKS

I don't expect the coin would be worth a great deal. Based on Teletrade history a 2000-P Sac has to be in a PCGS or NGC MS69 slab to break the $100 barrier. ICG coins usually sell for less, but that is your only option if you want the Intercept Shield holder. I'd declare its value as $50 if I were sending it in. If and when you offer it for sale you will learn whether the toning brings a premium price.
Maybe we need a Toned Coin category to more specifically discuss issues like this one!

Thanks so much for the help ... I called ICG and they told me they have never seen a toned sac and are eager to see it. They seemed very nice and told me there is a risk the coin might not get graded because of the tone but we shall see. All I can say is that in 2000 when the coins came out I decided to save a bunch of 2000p sacs. Just last year I decided to take them out of the box I had them in, to properly display them in an album. To my surprise 2 coins turned this tone. THe one I have pictured is the better one with much more color. I have my fingers crossed that they will grade it. I will keep you all informed. ICG is definitely my better choice because of the shield that can perhaps protect it better.

True it is not an error coin so should be somewhere else. For example are you aware there is a actual web site for toned coins? It is called toned cCoins collectors Society. They show, discuss, etc toned coins. Also have many links to toning processes, toned coin sales, AT and NT stuff. Myself, I would just dip it in acid to clean off that toning. I'm just not a tone lover I guess. At coin shows they just don't sell that well either. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
