@Libertad: Watch your mouth. Just because it's more difficult to lift a tiny but heavy coin box than to lift a pair of 18-packs (I would estimate these two things weigh about the same) doesn't make someone weak. It's a law of physics that has to do with inertia. The "weak" service workers in my family could break you in two. And yeah, I agree with the person who said you probably laugh at disabled folks. At least one of my friends works a desk job because he has cerebral palsy and can't walk particularly well without braces. Cut people some slack. What are you, a bodybuilder?

@Earle: Given that we're from the same town--YOUR DESCRIPTION IS PERFECT AND MAKES ME LAUGH. Some people out here in Phx ask me if I grew up in a Norman Rockwell painting and my answer is always "no, really, it's actually like that." They never believe me!

@OP: Be part of the solution, not part of the problem. Let me present you with two different banks.

Bank One: Asked for $10 in pennies. Teller got nervous and told me she had no money and asked what I wanted them for. I explained, briefly, that I'm a collector and like to look for Indianheads. She told me she didn't have any. I explained that there are also some error coins that are valuable, along with wheatheads, and she told me she didn't have $10 in pennies. I asked for $10 in dimes, and got the same skittish, evasive attitude. I left with my $10 in dimes and didn't go back.

Bank Two: asked for dimes. Teller said "sure! How many do you want?" I asked what was convenient, and she told me she had $250 in dimes in her coin box (I'm guessing because it'd be hard to run with that much metal). I asked for $70 and handed her a $50 and $20, which she took, and cheerfully counted out the dimes. She also told me they get in hand-wrapped rolls "all the time" and that I should "come back some time". She laughed when I pulled out my Teavana bag to put the rolls in and wished me good luck hunting.

Which one of these tellers do you suppose has had a nice, considerate CRH before? Which one has had someone rude or grabby?

Be as polite as possible. Anticipate the bank's needs (at Bank Two, I asked if I should bring back the searched rolls because I was taking a fairish amount of dimes, and was told it wasn't a problem), and accept that sometimes the answer will be no. Try not to burden any one teller unnecessarily.

Why are you so annoyed? Target is not in the business of "selling" coins, nor are you actually "buying" them. Do you really think they should look for specific coins for you? Wow!

Target uses their coins to make change for cash-paying customers, buying the merchandise they (Target) make their money on. By swapping the coins out (swapping your dollar for four quarters) they not only do not make money on the transaction, but when they run short of coin for the customers paying cash for the profitable merchandise, those customers go elsewhere ( Walmart) to buy that stuff.

I am calm, pretty amused actually. Again, why be upset over this? It is not their job to supply you with coins. It is their job to sell merchandise (which apparently you are not buying). Most places won't open the register to give you change for a buck any more without you making a purchase. Target is not a bank. They are a retailer of a multitude of things (except coins).

they only say they cant look at the costumer service desk which is where they would be according to them, but I cant make a purchase there. so it is practically impossible.

esandweiss: So, look elsewhere. And be kind--my work has a policy that if you open your drawer too much when no transaction is going on, you can be written up and even fired. Make your purchase and ask as it's being rung up.

Target has a costumer? Is it seasonal (Halloween) or year-round?

Keep in mind that Target probably does not order half dollars from the bank with their regular order of change. Any halves they get would come from customers paying for merchandise they purchase, which I'd bet is few and far between. Add to that rules such as ninamason mentioned, which are designed to protect the store from employee theft. Top that off with the philosophy that these stores don't have the time or resources to assist you in your search for coins, nor should they be obligated to do so. I honestly think it rude that people expect store clerks and bank tellers to accommodate their demands for coins to search. If they do, that's fine. No reason to be upset if they don't.

Hopefully, you've come on here for an explanation. Hopefully too, this helps. If you come on here simply to rant, there is only one type of cheese that goes with this vintage of whine, and no one has cut it (the cheese) yet.

I like what BadThad had to say, "If things aren't working out, just go to a new bank."

Also it may be helpful if you don't ask for old coins. Perhaps ask if you could buy rolls of coin. If they'll let you, then say would it be alright if I buy the CWR's and let them know which ones those are.Or, do you have any dollar coins, I mean large dollar coins, etc.

Many tellers may see your requests as a nuisance (old coins what does that mean) but will help if you phrase it closer to what they expect to hear.

Bottom line though, there are so many banks, just move on if one particular location isn't working for you.

I never ask for rolls anywhere but a bank. I happened to be at the post office talking about roll hunting and the clerk said they had a hand rolled roll of nickles and I took one of the bank rolls and swapped with them. Other than that, I only ask someone to quickly look for a particular item in their cash drawer when I'm making a purchase, when there is NOBODY in line behind me, and I make it clear I don't expect them to take more than a few seconds to look. I try to be as pleasant as possible and I usually carry an example of what I'm looking for. Right now I'm trying to find two 2004 circulation nickels. I carry the other mint mark of each so I can show them exactly what I want. So far I have only had ONE teller refuse my request. And she's my favorite teller otherwise. Always very nice and friendly. But I don't ask her to look for coins. That's not her job.

I found a bank that's more than happy to work with me. I think the tellers (most of them are young women, and I say this as a chick in her early 20s--they all look fresh out of high school!) are intrigued by the chick who keeps turning up on payday asking for dollar coins and pennies. It helps that they're the bank my store works with, too--I know when they're likely to be busy and when not, so I'm not holding them up.
