Poll Question
So you got your box of coins and some coffee, now what? What's your plan of attack?

Also as an extra question, does anybody organize large quantities of coins into individual years, to aid in searching, should you learn of a new error or variety down the road?

Do you:

Poll Choices
I have a list and search for paricular errors etc.
I research the coins as I find them.
 Other.

If I do cents, it's more about seperating copper and zincs. Sorting by date for noted varieties found on a site like coppercoins.com or varietyvista.com. And of course taking out any wheats and other different coins. Pretty simple process, and it makes it more fun.

I do separate by years. Just got a microscope so the 4 boxes I've gotten since I've started are sorted by years and now I'm slowly going through them looking for errors. Once I've gone through them all, I'll keep the varieties, copper, wheats, foreigns, and anything that looks cool. The rest will be rolled and sent back to the bank. From this point forward, I'll sort by year, look for varieties, keep everything mentioned above, and send them back. I won't have to sit on them this long again.

So far I have been keeping all the copper, 1996 and older. (Canada)

I use a magnet to separate the steel from the zinc and copper.
The magnet is inside of a small plastic bucket, I spread the coins out in a thin layer, then scan the bucket over the coins.
The steel coins can be easily released from the bottom of the bucket by reaching in the bucket and lifting the magnet.
Then the zinc is sorted by date, 1997 and up.
This helps for looking for specific magnetic or non-magnetic varieties.

It works fairly well so far. I'm trying to decide weather to sort the copper buy year, which complicates storage.

I am also debating whether I should keep zinc and steel, since we no longer make a penny. So far I have been taking the steel and zinc back to exchange for more mixed copper boxes.

My list is in my head, although I stricktly edge search the clad, and believe it or not, sometimes the nickels.

Interesting on the "stricktly edge search the clad" ,FFD. I guess it's safe to say that you don't inspect the modern clad for errors and varieties.

I can't help but wonder what falls into the "other" category, my poll is incomplete. lol

Get married, have kids, train them to do the searching for you. Then sit down with a beer and watch TV.
