I really dislike rude and uncooperative bank tellers and store associates. When I ask for old coins or coin rolls, its like I'm asking for them to move mountains. I just really love it when they sigh and tell me no!! They love to tell me that they collect all the old ones and silver coins, and customers come in and pay their groceries with a bag of franklins, etc..etc... Ok, I'm done, now, lol Sorry I had to vent. *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

They are probably salty because they are trying to keep them for themselves

I'm a little confused on how them telling you that they collect the coins for themselves is being rude and uncooperative? Unless I'm reading your post wrong, which might be the case. I would love if the tellers told me that upfront so I would know not to bother with that bank again.

My wife worked for a different banks for 23 years and she says they would never tell you they were saving them for themselves no matter what because they could be fired immediately for saying that. My wife's bank has people coming in all the time that work for bank companies looking for tellers who do stuff like that. If you have an account there they will sell you all the rolls they can, but only rolls not loose coins. Don't expect them to look for silver or wheaties for you.
My 2 cents

LOL, I love cashing in 2 boxes of pennies at a time just to spite a teller. They have NOOOOOOOO muscle at all they just sit around all day in front of a computer screen.

In fairness, a bank is not a coin store. Roll hunting, within reason, can be a fun hobby but when guys want to exchange $500 in change EVERY DAY because they are "mining" for junk silver, I would - were I a teller - cut them off very quickly. That's not my job and carrying around boxes of coins, particularly for some of the young gals who work there, can be hernia inducing.

Most banks will only accept rolled coins with the account numbers written on the rolls and guys like you are probably the reason why. Bet you like to laugh at Seniors or handicapped people waiting in line also. Most of those tellers would probably take you out in about 10 seconds. Sure this post will get removed.
Again just my 2 cents

Ok this is my take. I have heard that bank tellers are not allowed to tell customers that they collect for themselves. Don't know if its true or not, but I've heard that. It's like going to the gas station to buy a scratch off lotto ticket hoping to win something and the person behind the counter says, I found all the scratch offs that are winners. They are not suppose to 'fish' through anything, they are providing a service for a paying customer, just like a bank teller. They are providing a service for a paying customer. If they want to collect coins, great, go collect them like everyone else. I now go to the branch manager or the bank executives (you can find them on the internet) and talk to them, and most will hold coins, not really a lot of silver ones, but when you talk to them, they are much better in understanding than the tellers are. Some understand that coin collecting is not just a hobby, but a way of living.

That said if they do I have no problem with it as long as they dont steal it. As long as their drawer is right at the end of the day theyve done their job. If theyre collectors themselves thats just life, the majority arent and have no interest in the coins. Like was said above though a bank really has no obligation to help you roll search or get you coins on the cheap. If they want to help thats great but if not they arent doing anything wrong

I had the same problem, So I did some calling around, telling them what my intentions were. Results?
I found a message on my answering machine yesterday that the head teller left for me. She told me she called to let me know that since its a holiday week, the bank would not get its rolls until Friday... and that even though I did not call her to order my halves this week, she went ahead and did it for me anyway :)
I have GREAT group of people at my bank! I am thankful after hearing what other people have to go through.

My favorite teller at my bank (I always wait for her) gives me all the coin rolls I want, saves Ikes and other oddities for me and always has an ample supply of $2 bills! If you aren't happy with your bank, there are always plenty of others you can do business with.

@basebal21 I USED to live in a tiny town where everyone knew everyone - a true Andy Griffith style, but modern day, Mayberry RFD Atmosphere.
I am not really in a city per se, although the population per square mile is very high. Roads are always crowded like in a large city. I had always heard of the PA "Bible Belt" and admit I attribute the amiability of the people here to that fact. Of course they have their troubles (like the first bank I went to), but although I could never know everyone here like I did in the small town, most of the people have the same general caring attitude towards others the small town did.
