Bill: That double struck dollar is a beauty!
It is very difficult for us to see in the pictures of the fake to actually see that it is indeed a fake. Obviously a good one.
You have the advantage of having the coin in hand, and I think it would be educational for us all if you could reveal your opinions based on your own observations, as to why you think it is a fake.

The Greek key pattern around the edge does look a little rough on the fake, especially at the bottom under the first '1' in the date and at other places. The ground is very rough and hmm... the lines representing the sea at the bottom right of the shield are completely missing (both sides of the figure)! Need I go on? Mike.

The odd color of the piece, together with the strange expression on Britannia's face, made me suspicious. A weight check gave 28.2 grams. (Target is 26.9568 grams).

I see half the fake one was made upside down. Will they ever learn? ;)

andyg you better hope they don't learn. This one is pretty obvious. Bill, you have one great coin in that double struck piece. In 55 years of collecting, it is the first Trade dollar major error I have seen. Where did you find this one?

I got the double struck Trade dollar in trade from a U.S. collector who frequents major auctions, all over the world. I do know that he pays 'big money' quite often. Anyway, he may have gotten the best of the trade. I got 5 nicely doublestruck world crowns; he got my 1674 doublestruck Guinea (ex Bowers & Morena) and my 1714-1727 1/2 Guinea obverse brockage (ex Stack's, I think). Bill

Holy jealousy, Batman, that is an very cool double struck dollar. Since these were used in trade with China, I suspect that most major error coins like this were melted down since the Chinese merchants probably didn't accept them.

Very nice. You should get that error TPG'd.

An interesting point about Third Party Grading!
Thanks, but I don't have much confidence in their knowledge of World coins. (I know that others feel differently).

Bill if you decide to sell it some day, having it in an NGC or PCGS slab will be a big plus. It is a spectacular error coin and I don't think the grade is as important as the coin having a TPG bless it as authentic. It will put the mind of the potential buyer at ease.
