My bad, I should have put proof quarters, not proof dollars. The pricing was for silver proof quarters.

No worries. Well for my sake I hope they dont shoot back up to 200 and change till I complete the set. Right now it looks like only 8-10 of they get close to or into the 200 range and most seem to be from the start of the set and then the North Carolina too

I have the business strikes and the proof issued State Quarters and ATB Quarters, but only because I like the designs and enjoy going through them. Even a high grade (69 or even 70) would not strike me as a good investment. Also, the premium you pay on the slab versus raw coins doesn't seem to be worth it and I doubt it ever will be. There is obviously a chance that it could be worth it, but I just don't see the market ever taking off for slabbed State Quarters.

I like how coins look in slabs better. I can touch them and look at them all I want and not have to worry about ruining them. I like the state flag labels for this series too gives it a cool added extra.

I dont really care if they ever take off or not, would be nice if it did after I got them, but was more worried if later on I tried to do the other set that it would have happened for the one I didnt start and would cost to much to reasonably be able to try and do it

One more thing to consider, and I admit it is just my own idea.

TPG's started out as a unique idea for someone to find a way to make money from the coin hobby. As always Americans went for it (note most the rest of the world believes they are able to do their own grading without having to be told by someone else like a TPG).

I knew one day there would be someone brave enough to suggest the TPGs were not good enough and people would pay good the money to verify their already, "professionally" verified/graded coins had been labeled properly. So now we have the green bean.

I know the tech has existed for years to make a non-biased computer generated grading system that would remove human error and opinions (except the for the programmers making the algorithms for the computer to use!). In fact one of the large companies actually, (I think it was in the 90s), said they were going to switch to computer but did not.

Could it be their marketing dept. looked ahead a little and realized the amount of coins to be slabbed (old ones) had to one day start to dry up; hence they would have a lot less money coming in; and decided to put it off the computer grading for awhile so that when things started slowing down greatly, they coul dproffersomethinglike:

Dear coin community, you know we have done our best in the past to become a trusted company. You know out serviced have raised the quality and confidence level in the hobby. But we also know al humans are prone to error. We havegreat news in that we have found a way to eliminate that error forever! Our brand new computer grading system can accurately grade all coins using the same exact standard each time. Wouldn't you rest easier knowing your slabbed coins have been non-biasly graded to perfection? By re-submitting your old slabbed coins, you will be guaranteed a better appraisal. The more slabbed coins we can have computer-verified, the better the base of knowledge becomes for each date and MM! Send in your slabbed coins today - for the ridiculously low price of...

You get the idea. Personally, I would not be surprised to see the businesses find a way to cleverly tell us we need a new standard and the "old" slabs just aren't good enough. The old MS70's could/would lose value. I admit I've only been around ~50 years, but as time goes on, I am increasingly getting tuned into what really happens in our society. I predicted the concept of the green bean and it used to be a joke we all laughed about not believing anyone could ever "pull a fast one" like that b/c no collector would be willing to part with their hard earned money to have another "expert" verify what an "expert" was already paid to do. Oh well... we should not have been laughing!

And I may be wrong. And to anyone who collects MS70 slabs, I sincerely hope you get the chance to look back and say, boy Earle42 was crazy!

I could see the computer idea happening. The PCGS plus is implementing it to some extent, not sure it it will every be all computer based anytime in the near distant future, but eventually most things probably will be.

If it did get switched personally I would think that more of the older coins in the Mid to high mid MS would be the most affected by the switch. With the new modern coins at least they are pretty picky about what gets 70s and what doesn't. Really you could argue more of the 69s probably should be 70s but if they all were itd make it a little worthless.

It would be a great way for a quick business increase but would cost them long term business of people that try and resubmit coins to get the grades they want. I would be confident in the new 70s holding up to a computer though aside from the ones where something happens to them in the slabs over time.

But I couldnt agree more that we havent seen the end of the grading evolution. Its not so much an issue in the 68 69 70 range but the mid to low grades can have kind of a wide spread. Along the lines of the + services being offered now I wonder if that will develop into some 3 tier system to include a minus as well for the lower end.

Not a huge budget but could get 1 maybe 2 a week depending on the state. The jersey one is the only one that seems to be real expensive so far

Basebal21 find yourself a good bullion dealer. Mine regularly scrap Silver Mint Sets and will generally sell you the coins at a small premium over melt...since that is what they are about to sell them for anyway.

I bought my complete set of modern silver proof quarters for ~$4.50 each. He wasn't a coin dealer he didn't care about dates or rarity. And before you ask he takes the non-silver coins and puts them in his till...or did till he started to save them for me. I give him tubes to fill up and when he fills them he sells them to me for twice face. One dollar for a tube/roll of proof cents and $5 for a tube/roll of proof nickels.

jmk thats a nice deal you have worked out there. I've already got most of the mint silver sets so I have the raw covered. Right now I'm working on a perfect 70 set with the flag labels. I did end up going with the silver and may do a clad in the future

I think most replys missed part of your Selection. I would not buy into the Flag labels, PCGS Grade 70 will make a Great Collection. Forget First Strike-First Label or Flags, might as well shop on the Home Shopping Network-just my opinion

Gold I think a lot of the replys did miss that. I'm not getting the flag labels for any added value and really cant stand first strike unless its the same price, but I really like the flag label look. Unlike the first strike labels the flag labels seem to be easy to find and on ebay at least they are carrying no real premium over their non flag label counter parts.

I am far from a slab collector so I'd say no on slabbed coins of any kind. I collect coins, not plastic. And as to those State Quarters. I too collect them but only because I collect them. I see no future in a profit for those in the next thousand years. Slight exageration but a few hundred anyway. If in an Album, all reverses facing front, they are a bit impressive, educational and just nice to look at. A great gift for someone's grandkids too.

I collect coins too. If I only collected slabs I would buy empty ones. I hate this saying so much. People that collect slabbed coins are just as much a coin collector as anyone else.

But yes I am getting them basically because I want too and like what they represent. My only concern would have been if there was a consensus that either of the sets would have had a large price swing one way or the other and if a downward one would have waited it out longer to see if it happens.

I do think its a neat set and something cool to show future generations regardless of if it appreciates in value at all. At the very least they should be able to sell it for decent money if they chose too.

The flag labels are cool, I wouldn't knock them if someone enjoys collecting them. I've built 5 silver sets including the territories since 2010 from loose coins bought at melt for the most part. The '99 and '01 qtrs are the most expensive, everything else can be had at melt. 2 sets are in Dansco date only albums, the other three are in Air-Tites in tubes. I liked the State Quarters so much I started buying the silver ATBs in half roll quantities.
