Hmmm, what should I choose?

- coins with monkeys? ... no, probably not ...

- coins with open-mouthed emperors? .. uhhh, umm nah!!

- coins with big-boned beauties ... wow, no thanks!!

Coins with eagles on 'em ... actually, "coins with anything that flies" would be an awesome category ... yes, no?

So send 'em in => Eagles, gryphons, pegasus', etc, etc ...

=> 2 coin maximun before tomorrow 9:22pm (Manitoba time)

May have to sit this one out. Aside from a few decent-looking coins with Victory on them (I assume Victory counts because he/she has wings?), I don't have anything spectacular to contribute.

Well, that narrows it down quite significantly for me. I only have two coins that would fit this category. Neither of them too impressive.

Vitellius
AR Denarius, A.D. 69, Rome, 18mm, 2.64g, 180°, RIC I 109.
Obv: A VITELLIVS GERM IMP AVG TR P. Laureate head right.
Rev: XV VIR SACR FAC. Tripod alter with dolphin above and raven below.

Constans
AE Follis AE3, A.D. 346-350, Siscia, 19.2mm, 2.47g, 0°, RIC VIII 241.
Obv: DN CONSTANS P F AVG. Pearl diademed, draped and cuirassed bust right.
Rev: FEL TEMP REPARATIO. Phoenix radiate, standing on rocky mound; Î"SIS and symbol in ex.

Oh yeah I forgot about victory. Have a couple of those but I'll stick with my original submissions above.

I couldn't find any coins with pigs so I picked a pair of Pegasus types - one Greek and one Roman Republican (Q Titi). I will point out that the Corinth stater has a Nike with wings also so it should get extra credit.

A challenge: Yes, Victory has wings but show me a coin where she is actually flying as opposed to walking or standing. There are a few, I believe, but more often we see her wings as attributes rather than actually in use. Similarly, more eagles are posing than soaring. Flying coins with real action are not as common as we might want.

I have an Aurelian where Victory is described as "Victory facing, wings spread, rising up between two shields". It's hard to tell that she is flying, but that is the description. It's not one of my best coins, so I don't want to enter it in the smackdown.

Although I'm not sure either really flew, both creatures were often depicted with wings as though they could fly.

#1 Sphinx.. Castulo,Spain
By some accounts (but much more rarely), there was a second riddle of the Sphinx: "There are two sisters: one gives birth to the other and she, in turn, gives birth to the first. Who are the two sisters?"
