. . . . on asking to check a mutilated currency folder? I know folks here do it (I've seen the posts), but I've found a bank with a good supply of coin and friendly tellers, and I don't want them to decide I'm a creeper (or possibly casing the joint). HOWEVER, I do want to see if they have any silver certificates floating around (our poll, based on the number of fun old coins I find in their change, says "probably").

Is there a good time of day/week/anything specific I should say to put the teller at her ease or explain my interest?

Tell the truth

Say you're looking for old bills.

It's that easy? "Do you have a mutilated currency folder? I'm a collector and I'm hunting old bills"?

. . . . it feels like it should be harder than that.

Nah. My bank knows me by two names - Scott and Santa Claus. I've sung to them as I've come in, danced a little and always joke around. When people know you and are comfortable with you (and your eccentricities), it goes a long way in a relationship. Remember, your first contact point at the bank is the teller and it never hurts to be extra nice to them.

Maybe I should post a picture of me to explain the Santa thing. Gotta figure that out. Facebook me at Scott Alloway for a pix for now.
