I have seen this type of set pictured below (both french and english versions) a few times on ebay listed as containing the German planchet. These appear to be non-RCM sets containing the last $2 note and the first 1996 toonie.

Does anyone know if all these sets made have the German planchet toonie or if perhaps the seller is incorrect? The description does tend to drive up the bids!

I was wondering since I have a couple of these sets that I bought quite cheaply but they weren't described as having the German variety toonie.

I've been trying to get my hands on a German planchet toonie for some time now but can't seem to find any. I might be mistaken but I don't think TPG will even identify the German planchet anymore, which I think is adding to my troubles in finding one.

ICCS does not do it (as of middle of 2011). ICCS kept making mistakes, because Canadian planchets with strong die polishing can be deceptive - Brian Cornwell told me in person that they simply gave up, and will not do it anymore. However, CCCS still will certify a German planchet, if Louis if 100% sure it is a German planchet. I am planning to submit a bunch of German planchets to CCCS at the fall Nuphilex.

It is not easy recognizing a German planchet, I had the luxury of getting a 1996 sealed mint box last year (stamped with a May date - you don't find German planchets in mint boxes produced after May), and it took me a couple of rolls to get my eye into it... even with THE Twoonie expert at my side helping me...

Zonad has a wonderful comparative photo of 1996 German and Canadian planchet twoonies. If you ask nicely enough, maybe he will share it with you...

I was thinking that maybe all of these particular sets were put together before the arrival of Canadian planchets, therefore by default must contain the German version.

I have a known German planchet for comparison but I can't say with certainty what is different and what just may be individual coin differences.

This page contains a picture of a German Planchet. http://www.coinsandcanada.com/coins...rs-1996-2012

Charlton description is "The two dollar coin struck from a Canadian planchet has a shiny, polished finish that some collectors describe as "oily". The two dollar coin struck from a German planchet has a dull, matte-like finish, with lines similar to the bullion finish across the ring."
