I mentioned this in a previous thread, but I ordered a strap of $2 bills awhile back (just to have some fun money to spend) and ended up with 100 brand new sequential bills with serial numbers 04231901 - 04232000. To my eyes, those numbers look like the dates 04/23/1901 - 04/23/2000 and I imagine anybody born on April 23 some time in the last century would be happy to pay a premium for their birthday note ($10? $20?). The thing is, I don't know anybody born on April 23. And I can't see how it would be worth trying to sell them on ebay one at a time since there's no way of knowing if the "right" person would happen to be looking that particular week. Any suggestions? Should I just start spending them, or is there some way I could actually find people who would pay a premium for some or all of these?

Oooh, so close again! Two days off! I would be interested in 04211967. It all depends on who your market is. I would imagine that some people would pay a pretty good amount for them. I have seen them (CU $1 bills) on ebay for $19.99 (give or take). I would list them them either here or there ( ebay). Dang, that has got me thinking again about them. Isn't there a birthday listing on the CCF? There "used to be" down towards the bottom the main page.

There is a market for this type of note. I would easily pay $20.00 for a $1.00, $2.00 or $5.00 note with my wife's or one of my children's birthdays. List them on ebay. What do you have to lose?

Well, that's the thing... If I do a free listing for $0.99, I could end up selling a $2 bill for $0.99 and paying Final Value and PayPal fees on top of that. If I list them with a Buy It Now price of $19.99, I have to pay the listing fee even if it doesn't sell. At least, that's my understanding of how things work on ebay these days. I haven't really sold anything there in years.

If you don't have a store, the first 50 listings per month are free and I believe that includes buy-it-now and lots of photos.

Seriously? If that's the case, maybe I'll try listing 50 of them, each with a BIN price of $19.99. As soon as I actually have the time to photograph them all, that is...
Thanks!

You may not have to list them individually. You could say "Birthday, Anniversary or other occassion notes - April 23 1901 through 2000". And put in the quantity you have (100 available) and then it would count down from there. Just be VERY specific in your listing description that the "but it now" price is for ONE note, of the buyers choice. Scan 'em (begining and end notes should be fine) if you got one.
I am pretty sure that you would get a few sales out of these!

Your probably better off trying to sell the entire strap to a dealer. They in turn will try to sell them individually. So put the whole strap on ebay for a starting price of your minimum dollar amount you would let them go for and see if it sells.

How would the buyer select a specific note and what happens if two buyers want the same year? Have I mentioned it has been a loooooong time since I sold anything on ebay?

Maybe I could try that first and then, if I don't get any takers, I could see about selling them individually. Now the only question is what to ask for the strap. In a perfect world, I'd like to get $15-20 apiece, which would mean an asking price of $1500-2000 for the whole strap. Aside from the fact that I'd feel very greedy asking that much, I doubt the earlier numbers would actually be worth anything over face value at this point (not too many 100+ year-old people shopping on ebay). And, of course, a dealer would want to make a profit upon resale. Do you think $500 would be too much to ask?

The buyer would place that info (serial number) in the comments section in the check out section, this is where communication between buyer and seller comes into play.
You could do what Nickelman suggested and sell the whole strap, but it would probably bring a few dollars profit (double your initial investment of $200 to $400 if you are lucky), but it would be a quick turn profit, and none of the headaches in listing them yourself.

All right, I went ahead and listed the whole strap on ebay with a Buy It Now price of $400. Total list fees came to $4.60 (I paid extra to have it listed in two categories, have a subtitle with extra information, etc.) I can eat that if it doesn't sell. I listed it for 30 days. If it doesn't sell after that I'll consider listing them one at a time without all the listing bells and whistles. Thanks for all the advice!

Hi Barryg,
You can get most of that stuff without paying fees. Sounds like you beefed the listing up a bit. Good luck and hope it sells!!

Yeah, well the main thing was listing it in two categories instead of just one (I went with "Coins & Paper Money > Paper Money: US > Collections, Lots" and "Coins & Paper Money > Paper Money: US > Small Size Notes > Federal Reserve Notes"). And then I paid a bit extra to include a subtitle so I could have room to list the actual serial number range (and that fee got doubled because of the two categories).
As I said, though, I can afford to eat $4.60 if it doesn't sell.
Thanks for the good wishes!
