Just came across this WW I Victory Medal. Not rare or expensive, but I think it has great eye appeal.

Those normally come with a ribbon attached at the top. The WWI medals also appear with campaign clasps on the ribbon which add to the value. This medal was designed by James Earle Fraser, designer of the Buffalo nickel.

each of the Allied nations had their own design, but they shared the ribands.
The British Empire (except South Africa) shared one design: no campaign bars on them; but if one earned an "oakleaf" for being "mentioned in despatches", the symbol went on this riband. British medals had the name of the recipient impressed around the rim.

I have one of these that I got from a dealer's junk box for $0.50 or so. It took some research to discover what it was.

I remember when I was a kid occasionally hearing about an elderly WWI veteran. Now, according to wikipedia, they are all gone.

If you do some reading on the internet you can find all of the varieties of Victory Medals from the different Allied nations. They are interesting in that each country could design its own obverse, but the reverse was the same.

Medals from the UK and USA are regularly available on ebay for $15-25 after shipping. Most include the ribbon.

I entertained the thought of collecting them all, but a little research showed that the rare countries were selling for $150 or more each, which is out of my budget. I remember Cuba, Japan, and some European countries as being rare. When I started reading about these I ventured into the realm of militaria collectors, which I know nothing about. Sadly, just like valuable coins are counterfeited, the rare medals are also. :(

You have a nice one,
