I don't know about the 3d's but US minted florins were shipped by sea from the USA to Australia in bags. Those bags were handled very roughly on the docks prior to either being distributed in bags or being rolled by banks. This is why war minted florins are typically very baggy. A dealer told me this when we were going through some rolls of 1944S florins that he let us open.
