I've ran across a couple of Large Cents that have my initials counterstamped in them. Maybe something to build on... maybe not... Who knows how often coins counterstamped J.C. come along? It almost looks like someone colored in this counterstamp with a marker...

Coincidence, although unlikely. One of the victims was a Lt. Frank B. Griffin...

Connected, sure. Closely connected, who knows. Interesting nonetheless.

Recently, while sorting through my father's bring backs from WWII, I came across this counterstamped English Penny. In hand, it looks like USA with the initials DH on the left and a three digit number. 1x3. The reverse is worn smooth. Sorry, I don't know the story behind this one.

Picked this one up last week. I would really like to know the history behind this Capped Bust quarter.

When a name and a city/town is stamped on a coin, it tends to be relatively easy to attribute. Brunk reported that William Conaway of Philadelphia was making saws in 1856. He opened a store at 24 Cherry in 1857. By 1859, he was the proprietor of the Union Saw & Tool Manufactory at 402 Cherry. during the Civil War years, he added cutlery and other edge tools to his product line. He disappeared from Philly directories in 1866. There are three or four of these counterstamps known, with the latest dated coin being 1861. Thus, any or all of these stamps may have been done during the Civil War. As these stamps are small, they may well have been used on cutlery and/or edge tools.
