Thank you Mark and chefemasterj! I don't collect these, so I spent it today. I figured it would still be nice to post it though on the counterstamped thread.

I would have kept it. Plenty of room in one of "miscellaneous" albums.

This non-regal (counterfeit) 1774/1 Halfpenny of George III is counterstamped with an "8" and a punch or dot.

I cannot find this particular die pair listed in Atkins or Anton/Kesse, but there were so many "anonymous" counterfeits made that it's not at all uncommon to find previously-unlisted examples. This one has exceptionally thick and ornate lettering compared to some of the more commonly seen issues.

I find these non-regal counterfeits intriguing. Akin to the early counterstamps in general, much has yet to be learned and cataloged about them. As these go, that's a pleasing specimen, Paralyse. It looks to me like the "8" was formed by conjoined, circular punch marks. With the small "dot" added, I'm wondering if the intent was to re-denominate this copper, converting it to an eighth of a dollar, a bit? Just musing ...

Here's my favorite counterstamp, displayed on two different Seated Liberty coins (an 1855 half dollar and an 1854 quarter). The counterstamp reads: USE / GOODWIN'S / GRAND / GREASE JUICE / FOR THE HAIR / G.G.G.

This counterstamp is also known on a large cent, so if any of y'all come across one please give me a holler!

ExoGuy -- could be. I do agree that it was probably two circular punches. The coin actually has F+ detail, most of the "wear" is intentional on the part of this particular die-sinker as it shows none of the characteristics of bulge or swelling in-hand that might otherwise explain a weak strike.

Captainrich -- I love those two Lib Seated counterstamps; the fact that it's the same advert is a really nice bonus! Every time I see these come up for auction (with various cures, medicines, etc.) listed they always sell for very strong money, keeping me out of the market.

Does a counter stamp increase the value of the coin? (A girl can dream, can't she?)

Here's a counterstamped coin that I've found CRH. It's a "P" counterstamp on a 1977 P Lincoln Memorial cent. I'm now going to keep all counterstamped coins I find CRH.
