I just read an article about the name switch (to Windsor) and I had never heard of the Guelph before. I knew they were German but now it makes more sense. I wonder if the counterstamp had a political connotation back when it was floating around in circulation...? Report this Post to the Staff

ironhorse Valued Member Canada 363 Posts	Posted 01/19/2020 3:33 pm Heres one that just makes you wonder This one was found metal detecting an old site in maritime Canada, site dates as early as French Acadians and later occupation from post Revolutionary War loyalist so the origin is completely unknown. What I can tell you about it, pretty sure its silver,its 4.17 g (64.2 gr) and 24 mm diameter..thin and smooth on its edge. Here is where things get interesting...I'll try to describe what I see on it on a disecting axis on a clock based face...the ding at the top is roughly around the 12 o'clock mark First mark...just south centre..a seven pointed star with a "W" within Second..on a line from 7 o'clock to 1 o'clock..T & F Third..on line 12 o'clock to 7 o'clock ...P or D followed by T Fourth..12 o'clock to 6 o'clock A V or maybe L E C Fifth..at the 5 o'clock position...backwards S Finally...8 o'clock towards 11 o'clock position..remnants of letters or bad angle strike maybe O M This one doesn't have any decernable marks on the reverse other than scratches associated with moderate wear and ground action; of course corrosion doesn't help either. Just one I'd though I'd share; I posted a couple of other ones you guys might have noticed as well....mavericks at best but as always I was hoping someone else noticed one the same out there. I've seen a few others with multiple strikes and curious markings on them; trial or test pieces for jewellers or silversmiths or up and coming counterfeiters who knows right! Feeling theres more tokens that are unattributed than ones that are is becoming evident lol. I've moved on to coppers and I will be showing some over the next couple of days. Some are work to find anything but sometimes an easy one shows up. I found this one fifteen or so years ago and found info right away. Found in Canada so it's far from it's original home Perth UK. ironhorse Valued Member Canada 363 Posts	Posted 02/06/2020 1:01 pm once again I have a couple of old 'mavs' here, I just thought I'd share them P PLUNKET copper alloy 6.43 g 22mm diameter 2mm thick uniface oddball size kind of makes it stick out from others B B and S below inside scalloped shield/heart motif 27 mm just under 2mm thick 5.73g copper alloy uniface both were found in Atlantic Canada at early colonial sites apart from one another Report this Post to the Staff
