If genuine and it appears that way, your coin could bring as much as $20,000 at auction. Sounds like the 20 Pound offer was short a few zeros. If you are in the market to sell it, I would suggest contacting one of the large auctions houses and let them handle getting it certified and get you the most money for it at auction. Looks to be a real nice coin and you are lucky to have it.

Would I have to send it to America to get it authenticated and graded? I tried googling coin grading and the British one only seems to grade British coins. I'd be wary of posting it off when I have no idea of its value.

Strange, that British coins can be graded in the USA, but not the other way around?
Did you try the magnet test yet? Ensure that there is some form of protective barrier (cloth) between them before doing so.

troyster, you have an expensive coin that few people will buy unless it is certified. You might want to contact someone at American Numismatic Association Certification Service to find out how to send the coin and what the costs are as you can send it directly to them. The other graders require you to join their service or submit it through an authorized dealer. Possibly a dealer close to you in the UK can submit the coin for you and take all responsibility for getting it certified and returned to you.

No, I haven't got any other coins, unfortunately. I've got no knowledge of coins at all, and have just had this lying in a drawer all these years.

Variety B-14, BB-194, and as nice as they come. I see nothing to suggest a fake. Fish around in that drawer some more and see what else turns up!

You beat me to it because I was studying similar examples at Heritage. My first thought when I saw this thread, troyster, was "Here we go. Another new collector's hopes dashed by a counterfeit." It happens often here. I'm not so sure with this one. There are 4 PCGS-affiliated dealers in the London area, the only such in Britain. I would not expect them necessarily to be competent to attribute this issue, but one of them could likely facilitate submitting the coin to PCGS for its' attribution and grading. You'll find them here: http://www.pcgs.com/Dealers/default...5&mn=5&cc=UK Assuming it's real, and there are no disqualifying conditions keeping it from a "standard" slabbing, this one should achieve a grade of about EF45 and in a PCGS slab would have a value of about US$5000 today.

I am not seeing anything suspicious about this coin. It should be certified by either PCGS, NGC, or ANACS. PCGS and NGC will require that you purchase membership or submit through an authorized dealer. Membership will cost you $69 and $39 respectively in addition to grading and shipping costs. There is no membership with ANACS but if the coin needs to be sold, it would most likely bring a bit less money than if it was in a holder by the other two companies. A beautiful coin BTW!

Thanks everyone for your advice. I'll contact the London dealers and see if they can help me with grading and authenticating.

This would be too cool if it turns out to be authentic! If this coin could talk about it's travels across the Atlantic...

Good job, everyone. It's very rewarding to me as a member of this forum to see the efforts members extend and the quality of information provided. Congratulations on enlightening troyster as to the potential value of his coin. And troyster...good call on posting here and not selling for GBP 20!
