Peterson,

I started searching boxes of halves about a year ago. I usually go through a couple of boxes a week. About every 3 months, I am able to search 3 to 4 in a week. Several times I have taken a break from searching. My longest break lasted for about a month. It helps that I am lucky enough to be able to search at work sometimes.

Perersun: There was no way that I could see the price of silver a long way into the future. It was and is plainly obvious to me at least, that silver was being gradually withdrawn from circulation, by governments around the World throughout the 20th Century.

Gold has had a more patchy record of circulation over the last 20 centuries. There was a 'golden age' of gold coin circulation between about 1850 and 1900.

An overall review of Krause 19th and 20th century coin catalogues reveals this.

Silver, to the best of my knowledge is not issued for circulation anywhere in the World now. With the advent of a cashless economy, I cannot see that silver will ever be issued for circulation ever again. We are living in the end times.

Get those silver stragglers out of circulation whenever you spot them!

Indirectly from roll hunting. I sold all the 40% halves and 90% JFKs and used the $ to buy walkers and barbers.

It's surprising that no one here owns a silver boutique and buys coins off customers.

Could you give me the link if you meant that you had your own forum in hunting silver halves?

Yeah not to bad, but here is the real stats

subtract 1 box that had 296 coins

165 boxes=194 40% coins and 22 90% coins...... so a little over 1 40% coin per box, and 1 90% every 8 boxes, plenty of "skunk" boxes, still very fun though.

Banks like Washington Federal have pretty good rolls. I get around 2-4 40% silver in every roll. Nothing proff and nothing 90%.

Washington Federal only sells rools. They don't roll halves with a machine. They roll them by hand. Only loose rolls are avliable.

I have 3 Franklin halves and 3 Walking Liberties that I bought off a friend for $8 each. He doesn't collect. His parents own a liquor store so they sometimes get interesting coins that I buy off him for half market price. It's a fair deal, he gets fast cash, and I get cheap silver.
