Several months ago a goldsmith I know in a jewelry store who buys coins bought some gold coins from a couple of collectors he knows and then sent them in for grading. Both one dollar gold pieces came back as not good, they wouldn't grade the $3.00 Princess he sent in saying it was questionable, The $3.00 piece was sent in to a different grading service and came back as questionable again. That and the bad $1.00 gold pieces both went back to the collectors he bought them from. That goldsmith was sure at the time he bought those coins that they were good. I saw the coins and I wouldn't have suspected they weren't authentic.

I'll break the streak of raining on your parade...I really like the 1856 quarter eagle.

The previous comment on the $3 Princess is disturbing to me. It's either authentic or it's not and a TPG should be able to determine which it is.

No one is raining on my parade especially not another a fellow Marine. As a collector I expected some of these coins to be met with skepticism and I learned along time ago their is nothing and I mean nothing that hurts my feelings. I post coins that I find for everyone to see I don't care about what people think, it's a hobby, it's suppose to be fun, if it does not have an error on it it's for sale in my eyes.I just know that if I can help save a old coin from the melting pot and give someone else the chance to add it to their collection I did good.

Most of the pre 33 gold I buy, I get it from Canada. I have purchased some nice stuff from a friend there, and everything has come back good or better than I expected. Fakes are out there for sure. Buy the books then buy the coins. The best thing about those gold coins is the fake ones are gold also.
