I'm familiar with the US "millions for defence" hard times token, but this is a "mint drop".

Is this a hard times token, please ?

I don't have Lyman Low or Russell Rulau but would it be listed there ?

What is this one's grade ?

What is the significance of the legends ?

What is its retail value; what should I expect to pay for it if I bought it from a coin dealer ?

I believe the "Millions for Defense" is a civil war token probably dated 1863. This is a hard times token from 1838.

I thought the "Millions for Defense" tokens were in relation to the attacks by the revolutionary French on US shipping.

This is HT#63 hard times token which I would grade VF+ condition and has a value around $30 imo. Per Rulau and Wikipedia...

Mint Drop Token 1837 - "Bentonian Currency" was hard money as opposed to paper. The crash of 1837 and the Hard Times which followed were by no means solely due as the Wing leaders would have it believed--to the overthrow of their policy and the "mint drops" or hard money of Jackson and Van Buren: they were only the culmination of evils which had long been threatening disaster

The Locofocos were a radical faction of the Democratic Party that existed from 1835 until the mid-1840s. The faction was originally named the Equal Rights Party, and was created in New York City as a protest against that city's regular Democratic organization ("Tammany Hall"). It contained a mixture of anti-Tammany Democrats and labor union veterans of the Working Men's Party. They were vigorous advocates of laissez-faire and opponents of monopoly. Their leading intellectual was libertarian editorial writer William Leggett.
The term "Locofoco" derives from "locofoco, a kind of friction match," the name of which match itself probably derives from "locomotive + Italian fuoco, foco fire, from Latin focus hearth."[1] It originated when a group of New York Jacksonians used such matches to light candles to continue a political meeting after Tammany men tried to break up the meeting by turning off the gaslights.[2]

The "Millions for Defense" slogan originated from the Barbary Coast Piracy Era.

MILLIONS FOR DEFENSE / NOT ONE CENT FOR TRIBUTE!

See The Barbary Coast Pirates & Not One Cent for Slavery for an article which discusses the slogan, and its evolution into the later 19th century when variants of it, relating to slavery, were struck on Civil War Tokens.

Thanks,

Cheetah
