At a recent country sale I bought 2 specimens of 1887 short currency sets (not in cases) plus extra young head sixpences and threepences.
The quality of most of the coins is unbelievably good.

I paid about half catalogue price and thought I did well, but now I'm not so sure.

I'll post photos of each in separate posts.

Here's one of the coins:

Using a Myco electronic balance the weight is 11.34 grams.

Looks good to me as have all the coins you have posted.

Certainly this one is better than the one I fished out of my change in the early 1990's, that one had seen many long years of service :)

This year there were a couple of varieties, the first the date appears in roman numerals and the coin measures 30mm, then as yours with the dates in numbers are silver 28mm...they minted a total of 1,776,903 coins and also 1,084 proofs.

Also in 1887 the normal variety has 33 arcs; there is also a rarer variety with 46 arcs; maybe someone else can explain what that means. (Maybe it applies to the gothic style florin but I don't really know)

To my experience, it is rather difficult to counterfeit a silver coin in the Victorian Era. The technique of striking was very advanced and reproducible at that peroid of time in UK so I think the counterfeiters would never try to re-strike English coins. French and German coins were also very precise at the same peroid of time. Once the weight is okay, you must be confident to it especially for a common coin like that.
