J & M now sold out. Will now be interesting to see if they will fill the orders.

Yes, but can the price be sustained when everyone who ordered three sets get them. Right now, supply exceeds demand but that can change easily. A lot of coins start hot and fade as time goes by. A similar set last year, the 100th anniversary of the silver dollar sold for more than $200 on ebay when it first came out, now it is available at list price.

Except there is always another anniversary of some sort. (106th anniversary of the silver dollar?)
There is presumably only one year that the penny is going to go out of circulation.

While it is true that it is only one year where the penny will be gone, there are cheaper alternatives to commemorate the event. There is the $20 for $20 coins, there is the 1/2 oz coin, or even going to the bank to get a roll of pennies. In hard economic times, not everyone got $150 to $200 to throw around. At that price level, most kids would get video games or an ipod than a set of coins they will stash away in a drawer. You are looking at serious coin collectors for these sets.

Reproducing every single penny design since the inception of the mint is completely rare and unique. The penny is ceasing to exist. This set is the only way to capture the complete history of the Canadian penny. Nothing comes close to this set. There will never be another like it.

Quote: There will never be another like it Don't be so sure in this. I think, we may expect "Gold Penny set" or some "Vintage Penny subscription" where to the each original penny will be added silver and gold one. Looks like there is still potential in the "Farewell to Penny" event.

It could be true. Example - in 2011 together with annual Fine Silver Set, RAM issued 2 coins set, 1 and 2 cents in fine silver too, where they ceased from circulation in 1990. Limited issue, nice wooden box. RCM easily could do the same in the future.

^^^^ The ever important 21st anniversary? 6K mintage, still available. I have no doubt they will release other sets for various anniversaries down the road. My point is that this set commemorates the actual event not some made up anniversary, so there's more potential there. Among the currently available commemoratives, this 5-penny is the best/most meaningful imho. ETA: BTW did you see the Aussie coin designs? They sure don't look serious enough for official currency. I thought those were 1c and 2c tributes with different designs at first. The penny looks like Mishepishu from the RCM!

Sorry you won't get what Hobbes's so well described as : " Among the currently available commemoratives, this 5-penny is the best/most meaningful imho."

Oh no. Please do not mix what happens now and what could be in future. I totally agree, with the previous comments about definition of the 5 penny set. But didn't you say "There will never be another like it". How do you know? Like it - will not be, but will be something else, not less significant and well crafted. Do you know what will be in "Farewell to Loonie"? :)
And about affordability and availability of the both sets: Their issue price - CAD 80.00 and CAD 149.99 cheap enough, that makes possible just to buy it without thinking twice - what exactly I did. You so exited about it - I can try to get another one for you too, just let me know.

that's exactly what you are doing, saying look at the future!. You said "There will be another one in gold, and another one in silver, and another one in platinum, and another one in copper, and a 5, 10, 20, 50 year anniversay set. Ask your parents to buy it for you, because Your sour grapes reaction to a set you want but can't afford is quite obvious to everyone here. btw are you an alt?

Sorry, there is no sense to continue this conversation. And yes, when it will come as platinum set, I'll buy it.
While in every row I see "can't afford it" I understand, that you actually can't buy it due to financial circumstances. Do not bother yourself with this set - not need to be so jealous.

You are so argumentative for a brand new rookie. Have you been booted, and returned with a new ID?
Again to bad you can't afford the set, but don't take the pleasure away from the rest of us who can. What a sour grapes Kiljoy you are. Thanks for killing this thread.
