I was curious and had a spare 30 minutes this week, so I decided to run some numbers and get a better sense of the RCM's output so far for 2013-dated "collector" coins.

I counted all coins with a date of 2013 that were available for sale via the RCM website. This means I did not include any Maple Leaf bullion coins that must be purchased outside of the Mint, including pieces such as the silver and gold War of 1812 coins sold by Goldline or the silver bullion Polar Bear. I also didn't count the snake privy-marked SML sold by APMEX.

Also, to avoid double-counting, I tallied only individual coins and skipped subscriptions.

What I found amazed me. Here goes!

So far, the RCM has issued the following number of coins with 2013 dates:

Platinum coins: 2
Gold coins: 18
Silver coins: 43
Base Metal coins: 6
Sets (All Metals): 12 (not subscriptions; only annual sets, etc.)

That's a total of 81 different coins/sets.

If you set out to purchase all of the RCM's 2013-dated output (minus for a moment the gold and silver kilogram coins) you would have had to spend $28,370.62!

If you just purchased the non-Kilo gold coins, your bill would be $13,268.18. If you added in the three gold kilogram coins, your bill would rise to $220,268.18!

If you were only a fan of silver coins, you would have had to spend $4,416.89 to get all of the 2013 issues (minus the Kilo coins). Add in the three silver Kilos and your bill rises to $11,166.74!

Just a set collector? A purchase of each of the twelve 2013 sets issued thus far would set you back $4,533.95. Not so bad (sort of), most of the total is tied up in the gold Maple Leaf fractional set.

Finally, if you collected only this year's individual base metal coins, your wallet is likely feeling rather good. Total bill: just $159.70.

Of course, if you're the sort that has to have one of everything, your payments to the RCM would total a whopping $242,120.47! Nearly a quarter of a million dollars (at issue price) and we're only a third of the way through the year.

Just my opinion, but I'm beginning to think the RCM is out of control...

WOW! Mind you, if you got rid for the kilo gold it would be less, but still a ton!

In the latest quarterly report, the RCM sold $107.5 million of "Numismatics and collectibles" (to September 29, 2012), a 68% increase from the same period of 2011. That's the largest increase from any of their business lines. With all of the releases so far this year, I wonder how much the increase will be this year.

Seeing those numbers makes me realize how quickly things can add up without you realizing it. It's frightening how expensive this hobby really is

After reading your post, I had a new outlook on collecting coins. I need to call my VISA company and ask for a higher credit limit.

The premium for Ag coins are higher than for Au coins.

The RCM is going to monthly release. That means you are going to have more product on the production line. Most of these are celebrating non-relevant issues.

They are definitely have problems and hence the promotions.

Man, I have really cheaped out this year. The only thing I have gotten so far this year are the $20 for $20's and the Bison bullion.

Well, quite curious to make this same exercice for the previous years to compare... For sure, if they keep this trend lots of people will be discouraged to continue and they'll lost customer... The RCM maximize the revenue, it's the kind of thing that will happen once in a lifetime, just like to so-low interest rate for a home loan at bank, when I'll be a grandfateher and tell this to my little kids, they will not believe me how the money was so cheap!

Pretty soon the RCM will be doing a coin of the day! Yes they are indeed out of control. The greed will kill the hobby soon.
