looking for some clarity on the goalie mask production numbers. In my current book it says the Toronto mask had 244 pieces sold. Yet I have read else where that the actual number could be as low as 50 pieces. which number is the truth. The reason I bring this up, at one point I myself owned 11 Toronto masks and I find it very hard to believe that its possible that I held 20% of the total amount as they were very easy to obtain. I have recently sold some and even traded some but still have most of them. I find it hard to believe that these are as rare as everyone is making them to be. Don't get me wrong, I hope that the number is 50 but it is hard to swallow. Even the Ottawa mask says 95 pieces sold only and I have a handful of them as well that were very easy to gather over the years. So do we rely on the Charlton Standard as our go to guide or are all the actual numbers unknown. Every one seems to be very knowledgeable on this forum and I hope they can clarify what the actual numbers are or where we can find the answer. Thanks !

Charlton seems to be gospel even if the 244 number is correct, it's still tiny look at the numbers for the 2009 NHL minipuck loonies, back then the RCM struck NCLT to demand although illogical the mintage figures in their yearly reports they are what they are published. Try contacting the RCM, you might have better luck than I did.

I just submitted an inquiry to the RCM via their online feedback form. I will provide an update when I hear back!

@jimper The RCM website says that the mint produced UP TO 10,000. I believe the coins in this set came in a lot lower than that. If 10,000 were truly produced, we would see more than one Toronto Maple Leafs on ebay. I do not believe there are currently any Montreal Canadiens masks on ebay...

@jarms049 Quote: Specifications No.102836 Mintage10,000 Composition92.5% silver Finishproof Weight (g) 27.78 Diameter (mm)40 Edgeserrated Certificateserialized Face value20 dollars ArtistMarcos Hallam (reverse), Susanna Blunt (obverse) Only going what's on the RCM site. I guess these were such hot coins that people are just hanging on to them. IMO I sold all mine for double and triple of what they were issued at a few years back.

@jimper Oh I wasn't doubting you about what was posted on the mint's website. If you hover over the question mark next to the posted mintage it says "mintage is the maximum number of coins that will be produced. The lower the mintage the rarer the coin." I think this definitely leaves it open to the possibility that fewer than 10,000 of each coin was produced. Curious to see what the mint tells me!
Also, why would the Charlton Standard post such an odd mintage?
I love the conversation on these 10 year old coins! Still a mystery 10 years later.

Back then the RCM minted coins to demand, the small numbers comes from the annual reports even though the sold figures are hard to believe

I don't know the real numbers, but they are very scarce. Even the NGC and PCGS populations of these coins are very, very low.

NCLT coins are all going to grade 68 or better so grade is not that important other than a 70 but it seems with PCGS who grades very few coins 70, you need a special connection for them to place like the mintage # on the label which is the most important factor until that happens grading these ultra low mintage units is a waste of time. NGC seems to be who you know too, but it routinely cranks out ms 70 like they are routine, the other logical thinking one can infer is if the price of these coins are in the 500 bucks or more, if there are up to 10000 units they would be flooding ebay or all markets

@john100 I was thinking the same thing. If there are actually 10,000 of each mask out there and they are selling for 5-6 times issue price, ebay would be absolutely flooded with coins.

You are right, I know the NGC stuff better. I have been buying and selling coins for registry competitors for about 10 years. 99% of coins have been trending lower along with the price of silver, but the goalie masks are consistently going higher.
PF69 vs PF70 is very subjective when talking about NCLT, but the registry competitors demand perfect grades and are willing to spend the money to get them.

Here is one that was mishandled by the RCM, or was exposed to some sort of environmental factor causing an interesting toning streak. Or maybe the Queen is crying because she is a Leafs fan and she is stuck on the back of a Canucks coin.
