Just have to share this one. Pulled a pretty decent haul out of the 5/$1 bin at my local coin store - two 1 pound coins, one 50p,five 20p coins, and one Churchill crown. That's three pounds and seventy-five pence had for $1.80 (I found a little old Swiss coin to bring the total up to $2).

Way better than exchange rates.

Sweet! Keep going bck there and you could get enough to convert down into dollars.

Also, that Churchill crown is Cupronickel and it contains more than 25p of cupronickel. Dont go trqading that in, the mint brings em back and melts them into 5, 10, 20 or 50ps.

There is about 30 cents of copper nickel in a Churchill Crown.

You won't get much scrap value from the other coins, but somehow, I get the vibes that you have not even the slightest intention of flipping them for a nice face value profit!

I wish I lived near a 5 for $1 bin! On second thought, maybe best I don't.

I have a luxury of a 12/$1 bin in my neighborhood! Although I haven't seen anything I don't have in there for a while.

I've been keeping the crown as a pocket piece. It's come in handy in one of my grad courses on Victorian literature. Lots of talk of money in some of the novels we've been reading, so bringing a crown in so the other students could see the size of the thing was nice. After I get married on the 13th I'll be bringing my 1970 proof set, a silver threepenny bit, and a couple of sixpence back down with me so I can pass those around too.

Calculated prices:

Copper 0.82 cents / gramme
Nickel 1.82 cents / gramme.
Copper nickel alloy weighted average 1.07 cents / gramme
Churchill crown 28.2 grammes
Value of CuNi alloy 28.2 x 1.07 cents = 30 cents

To make a profit out of collecting CuNi crown size coins, you need to buy them out of the junk bins at more than 4 per dollar.
My technique for searching junk bins is to remove the large junk coins first, so that perhaps you may be lucky enough to find the interesting and unusual coins underneath.
I live in Australia. Bashed up Ikes in junk bins annoy me. There is less than 20 cents metal value in those, and they mostly turn up in the $2 to $ 5 junk bins.

Is the Churchill Crown still legal tender worth 25p? Because there is no value noted on the coin itself I read somewhere these are still bankable despite being pre-decimal. Good job finding a bank that will actually take them though!

I'm actually surprised these coin shops don't save up all the current world currency they get. Would you believe I've picked up Euro's at car boot sales rummage boxes for 10p.

Keep a watchful eye on who has the piece that you're passing around. Things go missing.
